The threat of winter driving has mostly subsided, which means it’s time to remove studded tires from your vehicle.

The deadline to have them off is Monday, the state Department of Transportation reported.

Studded tires are legal in Washington from Nov. 1 to March 31, unless DOT extends it. Drivers who don’t remove the studded tires by the deadline face a citation.

DOT reminds drivers who head to higher elevations to still prepare for winter driving and carry chains.

“While WSDOT road crews continue working, no one can guarantee ice- and snow-free roadways,” DOT reported.

What is it going to take to outlaw thees tires which cause millions upon millions of $$ damage to Washington streets and highways? Studded tires are a throwback to another era.

  3. I agree, Sister. There is NEVER enough snow on the roads to justify them. Another trend I’m seeing: Cars with front wheel drive, or 2 wheel drive on back wheels, and snow tires on ALL FOUR WHEELS! That is an ignorant driver AND a ruthless tire salesman. They go on the DRIVE WHEELS ONLY, people. If a tire dealer tells you otherwise LEAVE immediately, you are being taken advantage of!
If the roads are bad enough where you need snow tires to feel more confident… STAY HOME! If you’re that scared to drive, you’re a liability. I have a four wheel drive suv and I only drive in snow if i have to. I go over Snoqualmie Pass sometimes 8 times in Winter to get my sons home from College. Even with 4 wheel drive, I’ve spun out. Save your money. Snow tires are a waste of time in Western Wa. UNLESS you HAVE TO travel.
