The state Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct will close this weekend so crews can make improvements.

Both directions of SR 99 between Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge will shut down from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers should expect more backups in and near downtown Seattle, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Crews will be reinforcing a two-block section of the structure above the path of the future SR 99 tunnel, WSDOT reports.

Another weekend closure is expected in mid-May so crews can fill cracks and wrap previously damaged sections of the structure in protective reinforcing fiber.
