UPDATE as of 9:15 p.m.:The backups now extend from Marvin Road in Lacey to Thorne Lane in Lakewood, according to WSDOT.

INITIAL POST: Heavy traffic is causing backups on northbound Interstate 5 between Pierce and Thurston Counties, the Washington State Department of Transportation reports.

Backups extend about 15 miles between Pacific Avenue in Olympia and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Troopers said there are no incidents on I-5 and drivers should avoid weekend traffic.

There’s an old standby of an article! You could publish this any day of the week and it would be accurate news.

  2. This isn’t news anymore. I regularly commute between PDX and Tacoma and this is always the case between say 2:45 PM and 6:30PM any and all days of the week. We (Tacomans, Pierce County-ites, etc.) are basically hostage to the traffic problems in this area. I am glad for the economic impact the base brings to our area but I realy could do without the miles and miles of backup it creates. The WSP offers no solutions, just “there is a backup” reports. LOL!

you aint seen nothin’ yet..wait about 10 years when the illegals come of age and start driving – it will be quicker to get out your car and walk
