Drivers on state Route 18 in Federal Way should be prepared for overnight closures this week as crews lift concrete bridge girders into place.

The eastbound lanes near Interstate 5 will shut down from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. tonight and Tuesday night.

A nine-mile detour will send traffic from southbound Interstate 5 to 54th Avenue East before continuing on to northbound I-5.

Crews will close westbound lanes from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights while construction on the $112 million project continues.

A four-mile detour will be available from northbound I-5 to South 320th Street before continuing on to southbound I-5.

The work is part of the effort to alleviate congestion at the interchange connecting I-5, Route 18 and state Route 161. Two new flyover ramps are also being built to reduce lane weaving.

  1. Wouldn’t it make a lot more sense (oh wait the government is involved so it doesn’t have to make sense) to divert the northbound traffic onto 16th and then up Pacific Highway to 320th?
