Extensive backups are expected this weekend when crews close southbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood near Bridgeport Way to continue repairs on Clover Creek Bridge.

The closures start at 9 p.m. Friday and extend through 5 a.m. Monday.

Washington State Department of Transportation says 10-mile backups and three-hour delays are expected.

During the day, three lanes will be open but they will be much narrower than usual. Three lanes will close overnight. The ramp from Bridgeport Way to southbound I-5 will be closed all weekend.

Crews are replacing bridge slabs and repairing the crumbling bridge deck.
WSDOT said there will be one more weekend of closures to complete the work.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.

Southbound drivers who use state Route 167 to state Route 512 as an alternate route should also expect delays because backups will reach SR 512.

Drivers coming from the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas to south Puget Sound should take state Route 3 or US 101, WSDOT reports.
