Traveling this weekend? Some advice for getting around

Here’s the 411 on getting around this holiday weekend, with links to other helpful sites.

HIGHWAYS: AAA is predicting a 3 percent decrease in automobile traffic compared to last year, when gas prices were about a buck cheaper on average. In Washington, average gas prices were $3.83 a gallon ($3.80 in Tacoma), according to this week’s survey.

It’s still one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The Washington Department of Transportation is advising to expect heavy traffic on Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass, US 2 over Stevens Pass, Interstate 5 near the border and I-5 between Olympia

Nalley Valley interchange opens for business

After years of waiting, motorists from Interstate 5 can use the spiffy new off ramp to State Route 16 and access Sprague Avenue. The exits were open this morning as scheduled.

The $184 million project is designed to eliminate the “weave” that led to frequent backups and accidents at the interchange.

I confirmed the opening on my way in to work this morning, eager to try the new “L” shaped exit from Highway 16 to Sprague. I’ll say this: When they say slow down to 15 mph at the hairpin turn, they mean it.

Motorcyclists ride for children’s charity today

Motorcycle riders will be hitting the highways today as part of an annual event to raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Organized riders in the Imagine Guild Children’s Ride will be department in the morning from Harley-Davidson dealerships in Tacoma, Lacey, Renton, Lynnwood, Marysville, Silverdale and Bellevue. They’ll make their way to the Enumclaw Expo Center for the annual charity event.

There will be a catered lunch, musical entertainment, a comedian, a fashion show and auctions during the event, a press release states. The gates open at 10 a.m. and admission is $40 per person.

Major delays expected on I-5 in Lakewood this weekend

Extensive backups are expected this weekend when crews close southbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood near Bridgeport Way to continue repairs on Clover Creek Bridge.

The closures start at 9 p.m. Friday and extend through 5 a.m. Monday.

Washington State Department of Transportation says 10-mile backups and three-hour delays are expected.

During the day, three lanes will be open but they will be much narrower than usual. Three lanes will close overnight. The ramp from Bridgeport Way to southbound I-5 will be closed all weekend.

Crews are replacing bridge slabs and repairing the crumbling bridge deck.

ALL CLEAR: Crash blocks lanes of I-5 in Lakewood, clogs up traffic

UPDATE as of 12:05 p.m.: The crash has been cleared and the lanes reopened to traffic. The backup remains.

UPDATE as of 11:35 a.m.:  Southbound drivers are backed up six miles; northbound drivers four miles and westbound drivers on SR 512 one mile.

UPDATE as of 10:55 a.m.: The Bridgeport Way crash has been cleared and no longer blocks the left lane of southbound I-5, the state DOT reports.

The Thorne Lane crash remains a problem, however.

UPDATE as of 10:40 a.m.: A second crash is blocking the left lane of southbound I-5 at Bridgeport Way.
