Drivers will not be able to use the southbound Interstate 5 HOV lane for the next 10 days.
The state Department of Transportation will close the lane just south of state Route 18 at 7 p.m. today. It will remain closed to traffic until 1 p.m. May 23.
The closure is part of a $112 million, ongoing improvement project that began last August. During the 10-day closure, crews will cut open the pavement on the left shoulder. They’ll dig 13 feet below the surface and install a system to catch and treat runoff from the highway, DOT reported.
This is the first in a series of closures over the next several months. Starting May 31, transportation crews will close the ramp from Weyerhaeuser Way to westbound SR 18 for three months. In August, the westbound SR 18 ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed for four weeks.
The project is scheduled to be done in late 2012.
