I-5 detour for Triangle project starts Tuesday

Commuters who take Interstate 5 through Federal Way can expect delays as a summer-long project gets underway Tuesday.

The ramp from Weyerhaeuser Way to westbound state Route 18 will close Tuesday for about three months as crews prepare for one of two new flyover ramps as part of the $112 million Triangle project.

Drivers will follow a four-mile detour from eastbound Route 18 to the West Valley Highway and back to westbound Route 18.

About 4,300 people drive through that area daily, according to the state Department of Transportation.

UPDATED: Milroy Bridge over Puyallup River closed Tuesday, May 31

The Milroy Bridge over the Puyallup River will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, for a structural inspection.

The state Department of Transportation and Pierce County Public Works and Utilities inspect the steel truss bridge every other year to ensure it is safe for the 11,000 vehicles that use it daily.

During the closure, crews will also finish concrete deck repairs.

The bridge was built in 1931 and connects state Route 167/River Road East with North Levee Road East at 66th Avenue East.


Expect delays: Road work starts today on section of Spanaway Loop Road

Crews will start restriping a section Spanaway Loop Road South today.

The work, which is scheduled to last through Wednesday, is expected to impact traffic, Pierce County reports. Crews will be working on Spanaway Loop Road South from Fair Oaks Drive South to Military Road South.

When the project is completed, the roadway will feature two southbound lanes, one northbound lane and a two-way, left-turn lane. Restriping will provide more room for vehicles going south during the evening commute, the county reports.

Southbound I-5’s carpool lane reopens

The southbound Interstate 5 HOV lane reopened today, five days ahead of schedule.

On May 13, the state Department of Transportation closed the lane just south of state Route 18 so crews could cut open pavement on the left shoulder and dig 13 feet down to install a system that will catch highway runoff.

The lane reopened at 2 p.m. today due to fast-curing concrete. It was scheduled to remain closed until May 23.

The closure was the first of many to come as part of a $112 million project that will build two flyover ramps at the interchange.


ALL CLEAR: Car fire, crash cause problems for morning commuters on SR 16

The HOV lane of eastbound state Route 16 is blocked this morning as crews battle a car fire, the state DOT reports. Drivers are getting around the scene at Pearl Street using the right lane.

A secondary crash occurred just west of the care fire and is blocking the left lane, DOT reports.

Drivers are backed up to the Gig Harbor side of the Narrows Bridge.

UPDATE as of 8:50 a.m.: The car fire has been cleared. The secondary crash continues to block the HOV and left laned.

ALL CLEARED: Mudslide blocks part of state Route 509 in Federal Way

UPDATE as of 4:45 p.m.

All lanes are now open.

ORIGINAL POST: A mudslide is blocking part of state Route 509 at Dash Point Road.

Both directions of traffic are alternating through the northbound lane in the Federal Way area of the highway.

The incident was reported around 11:40 a.m. There is no estimate for what time all lanes of traffic will reopen.

I-5 HOV lane in Federal Way to close for 10 days

Drivers will not be able to use the southbound Interstate 5 HOV lane for the next 10 days.

The state Department of Transportation will close the lane just south of state Route 18 at 7 p.m. today. It will remain closed to traffic until 1 p.m. May 23.

The closure is part of a $112 million, ongoing improvement project that began last August. During the 10-day closure, crews will cut open the pavement on the left shoulder. They’ll dig 13 feet below the surface and install a system to catch and treat runoff from the highway, DOT reported.
