Updated: Car strikes barrier on southbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood

UPDATE, 7:15 a.m.: The accident has been cleared, but long traffic backups remain. DOT says southbound backups extend from the crash site at Bridgeport Way to 72nd Street. In addition, westbound state Route 512 is backed up almost four miles to Portland Avenue.

Initial report: The State Patrol and aid units are on scene of an accident on southbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood.

A car struck a barrier around 6:30 this morning near the Bridgeport Way exit. The crash is blocking the left two lanes of Interstate 5.

According to the state Department of Transportation, traffic is backed up from the scene to 84th Street. Westbound state Route 512 is backed up to SR 7/Pacific Avenue.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible or delay their trips.
