UPDATE: Sumner officials say the West Valley Highway in Sumner will remain closed overnight because small mudslides are still occurring in the area.

Earlier, they had estimated that the highway would reopen at 4:30 p.m.

INITIAL POST: The West Valley Highway in Sumner is expected to reopen about 4:30 p.m., nearly a dozen hours after an early morning mudslide shut down the road from 24th Street on the north to Sumner Heights Drive on the south.

City crews have spent the day cleaning up the debris that tumbled off the mountain about 5 a.m. Public Works crews and police are monitoring the hill and said it is still unstable.

Drivers who need to pass through the area are asked to use Highway 167 until West Valley Highway reopens.
