Second bites: Netshed No. 9 in Gig Harbor, Whitehouse Restaurant in Bonney Lake

Yum! Burgers! Click below to see where I found this delicious pile of meat and bun.
The Whitehouse makes it easy to cut your burger, the kitchen stabs a knife right into the center for you, before serving.

When new restaurants open, occasionally I’ll find flustered service or a kitchen producing less-than-stellar results. That’s why I return for a second visit to test whether the restaurant is suffering the usual aches of fledgling restaurants, or if there’s a bigger problem. Unlike diners who turn to review websites to post “I hate you! So there!” assessments after a single visit, newspaper critics who follow AFJ standards always return to the scene of the crime a second, third or fourth time. Here are second bites of two restaurants that earned mixed reviews after first-bite visits in April. Read more »

First bite: Whitehouse Restaurant and Lounge in Bonney Lake

What kind of diner you are will determine whether you’ll embrace the newly opened Whitehouse Restaurant and Lounge in Bonney Lake.

Appreciate steakhouses that list a half dozen cuts? Fan of big, messy burgers? Have a hankering for pub fare? Whitehouse should be on your to-dine list.

Want something more unusual or more upscale than what Bonney Lake already offers? Looking for a date-night destination? You’ll need to keep looking.

While casual-leaning Whitehouse fills a restaurant void that stretches across East Pierce, the pub-style menu and come-as-you-are vibe feels similar to nearby Midtown Grill and Hop Jack’s. Those something-for-everyone restaurants carry menus comparable to the Whitehouse, which lists burgers, steaks, sandwiches, a handful of pastas and pub-style eats, such as fish and chips (see menus below).

Similarities with the competition aside, Whitehouse seems to be doing fine for a fledgling restaurant, and it’s reassuring to see another family-friendly place in that neighborhood. Whitehouse operates in a space that was vacant for far too long after Andre’s Bar and Grill closed more than a year ago. Read more »

Opening in Bonney Lake – Whitehouse Restaurant and Lounge

A community short on dining options is about to get another – expect a February opening for Whitehouse Restaurant and Lounge in Bonney Lake. The Whitehouse will operate in a building that’s been empty for more than a year – the old Andre’s Bar & Grill restaurant site.

The restaurant comes from Sumner resident Tim Whitehouse, who also runs LumberJack’s Bar and Grill in Buckley. Whitehouse is a culinary arts graduate from Renton Technical College. He previously managed restaurants in Port Orchard and Sumner. His mother Charlotte Yearwood, who has worked at local restaurants for years and used to run an espresso stand in Sumner, will work with Whitehouse. Kayla Babcock will supervise the kitchen, Whitehouse will be the opening chef. Read more »
