Tourist Tacoma: Surf-and-turf restaurants with waterfront views

From the Foss Waterway to Ruston, from Titlow Beach to Chambers Bay, South Sound’s waterways are dotted with restaurants boasting this-is-why-we-live-here views.

In the final installment of my Tourist Tacoma series, I’m suggesting where to take out-of-town diners to impress upon them that our water views are better than, well, anything they might have back home. (So there.)

I’m recommending restaurants that have proved their prowess for consistent dining — no matter the price tag. I cover broad territory here with everything from cheap fish and chips to surf and turf that’s best enjoyed with an expense account.

First-bite restaurant report: Boathouse 19 at the Narrows Marina

Fish tacos at Boathouse 19 come with a corn and tomato salad. The restaurant opened July 2 at the Narrows Marina.

While the Lobster Shop restaurants are the big brothers – solid, cigar smoking guys with an impressive wine collection – Boathouse 19 is the fashionable little brother who looks as if he stepped out of a Hollister ad, all fresh-faced, with a cheeky sense of humor. The Narrows Marina restaurant opened July 2. It’s the project of Denny Driscoll, who has owned the waterfront Lobster Shop restaurants on Dash Point and Commencement Bay for three decades. The menu is designed by Tom Small, executive chef for the Lobster Shop restaurants, Boathouse 19 and Driscoll’s other restaurant in Gig Harbor, Tanglewood Grill. Read more »


First bite: Social Bar & Grill on Tacoma’s Foss waterfront

Complimentary savory cassava root doughnut appetizers, Ahi poke with a tangle of seaweed, swordfish skewers coated in chimichurri, sublime roasted duck, pitchers of sangria – all with a waterfront view of the Foss Waterway. I’m ready to move in for the rest of the (pseudo) summer at Social Bar and Grill, the newest restaurant that opened July 26 on Tacoma’s urban waterway.

With this-is-why-we-live-here views and a lively dining room made over with a floor to ceiling picture window fully framing the display kitchen, Social is a buzzing restaurant teeming with movement … and noise. Read more »
