An outpost of The Freeze, a frozen yogurt shop in University Place, is opening in the Lincoln neighborhood in that little funky building that housed Jubilee Burgers until late last year. Rumors had circulated that someone was looking to reopen Jubilee and continue its burger legacy, but that plan never materialized. Cheap lunch: Melon Seed Deli and Frozen Yogurt in Tacoma

I’ve given up hope keeping up with all the frozen yogurt openings, but I do know that Black Bear has spawned two more stores in Tacoma and Puyallup in recent weeks. And I’m pretty sure Menchie’s opened a froyo shop in my basement when I wasn’t looking.

While I won’t be writing again about the deluge of froyo, what is worth noting is the new Melon Seed Deli and Frozen Yogurt shop on Center Street, near Union, that opened April 6. I like them not for froyo, but for their sandwiches. I want to call them cheap, but that’s a pejorative term in restaurant circles. Instead, I’ll call them ridiculously affordable. Read more »


More froyo: Three new frozen yogurt stores in Tacoma and Gig Harbor

The trend is a little later than the rest of the country, but self-service frozen yogurt shops officially have kaboomed in the South Sound. Last year, we had three frozen yogurt stores. This year? Nine.

Food trends come and go. Perfect example? Frozen yogurt.

A few decades ago, it seemed every mall in America had a frozen yogurt shop. Then came the ’90s and frozen yogurt disappeared along with Members Only jackets.

Enter national chains such as Pinkberry, Orange Leaf and Menchie’s, which have infused the old froyo concept with a serve-yourself yogurt model. It took a few years to arrive in South Sound, but now it’s here in a big way in the form of chains and locally owned stores. Stores are opening so quickly, I can barely keep up. Read more »
