Live report: Moveable Feast 2013 at Cheney Stadium, a gathering of food trucks

The crowds are building right now at Moveable Feast, the Tacoma’s second annual gathering of mobile food businesses. There’s everything from lumpia to handmade ice cream to Cajun eats and fried Russian meat pies at the festival. I just popped in and took photos of almost every menu I could find. Take a look below. The event runs until 5 p.m. today at Cheney Stadium. Admission is free except for the cost of food. Parking is $5. Read more in this blog post. Read more »

Food truck gathering: Moveable Feast is Sunday at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium

Cheney Stadium filled quickly at last year's Moveable Feast, as this photo details. This year, the footprint and number of food trucks participating has increased. The event is Sunday July 28, 2013, at Cheney.

They’re restaurants with steering wheels, food emporiums atop four tires with menus of scratch-made eats. When nearly 40 mobile food trucks gather Sunday at Cheney Stadium, it will be a pop-up food court like no other in the South Sound.

The one-day festival Moveable Feast runs from noon-5 p.m. Sunday. It’s free except for the cost of food and five bucks for parking. A VIP $10 ticket buys early entry and parking (see below for details).

Credit tricky municipal regulations, a smaller inventory of food creators or shaky economics, but Tacoma’s mobile truck scene has remained far-flung and small.

The South Sound is home to at least a few-dozen trucks or carts — most of which serve Mexican food, but there’s also Filipino, barbecue, hot dogs, cake and even frozen yogurt — but unlike Seattle and Olympia, no pods or cart lots exist here for trucks to gather on a regular basis. Read more »

Live report: Eating around the Moveable Feast at Cheney Stadium

For the first time, Tacoma’s food carts, trucks and mobile restaurants have found a collective home, if only for a day. About 30 South Sound and Seattle-area food trucks, carts and mobile restaurants are assembled right now at Cheney Stadium, home to Moveable Feast, Tacoma’s first-ever food cart meetup. Vendors will serve until 7 p.m. today.

Our neighbors to the north and south have food cart lots – places where mobile restaurants flock so that diners can mingle and graze, but Tacoma has yet to produce a home for Pierce County’s far-flung mobile restaurant

Moveable Feast update: More than half of participants will be South Sound food trucks

Moveable Feast organizers checked in this week with an update of Tacoma’s first mobile food meetup on July 29 at Cheney Stadium. I was impressed to see more than half of the 35 vendors will be South Sound mobile food vendors, catering stands or local restaurants. That’s a big increase from the short list organizers had initially booked when the event was announced in early June.

For background, read this June 7 blog post, but the quick and dirty highlights are this: Read more »
