12th Man crepes at Savor Creperie in downtown Tacoma

Tacoma’s Savor Creperie  is the latest restaurant with a Hawks special. Featured this week is a dessert crepe. Wrote Savor owner Tom Vigue, “We’re pleased to announce we are running a special this week. The Seahawks Crepe featuring the Hawks colors. Veg-friendly: Crepes at Savor Tacoma Creperie

My vegetarian friends, I’m always looking out for you. Opened April 18, Savor Tacoma Creperie has brought a style of dining that downtown Tacoma much needed:  stylish, quick dining and something sure to be a hit in that stretch of downtown – vegetarian friendly dining.

Owner Tom Vigue, who is a newcomer to Tacoma, but not to restaurants, has designed a menu of more than two dozen crepes – about a dozen each of savory and sweet, along with a half dozen crepe scrambles. Here’s the bonus – more than half the menu is vegetarian.

First bite: Savor Creperie opens in downtown Tacoma

Some chefs treat crepes like tortillas, using them as roll-up sandwich wrappers. Others serve crepes as open-face affairs. I’ve even seen a chef turn a tower of crepes into a cake (called a mille crepe cake). At Savor Tacoma Creperie, which opened in downtown Tacoma yesterday, crepes were served as folded-over envelopes, warm pockets spilling thinly sliced meats, melted cheeses, saucy drizzles and fresh herbs. The crepes were exactly what I’d hoped for.

Savor is a cafe everyone should put on their must-visit list, if not because of fair pricing, then because the crepes were well tended – even on a busy opening day with a line out the door. The crepes tasted tender with a gentle bite, came with thoughtfully composed flavors and fresh herbs peppered every plate. Savory crepes were around $8-$9, with a side of dressed greens. Opening Thursday: Savor Creperie in downtown Tacoma

Savor Creperie plans to open this Thursday. Expect a casual eatery with prices solidly under $10. The menu will list a dozen each of savory and sweet crepes, a short list of crepe scrambles and liege waffles.

While the doors won’t officially open until Thursday, the restaurant has been open by invitation since Friday, when owner Tom Vigue hosted a tasting part for 35 invited guests. Earlier today, workers were turning away curious passers-by, saying they were only serving by invitation today. A display window showed a busy kitchen inside with line cooks dressed in chef whites and toques. Staff workers were outfitted in formal attire, complete with pastel ties against white dress shirts. Opening delay: Savor Creperie plans April debut in downtown Tacoma

Construction delays have moved the opening of Savor Creperie forward an additional month. The creperie will operate in the University of Washington Tacoma neighborhood. Owner Tom Vigue said he’s expecting to be serving crepes by early April. Vigue said last fall he planned to open by January, but turning the former bookstore into a restaurant space has taken longer than previously expected. Vigue, a newcomer to Tacoma, described his menu as something like what one would find in the many walk-in creperies that pepper Vancouver B.C. Read more »


Opening in downtown Tacoma – Savor Creperie

Coming to downtown Tacoma in January – Savor, a creperie that will operate at 1916 Pacific Ave. Think of this creperie as the kind found all over Vancouver B.C. – small cafes where diners order at the counter and take a table as their crepe is made to order on a griddle.

Owner Tom Vigue is new to Tacoma, but not to restaurants. Before moving here this year, he operated Chef Appeal in Richmond, Va., and worked in corporate chef positions with hotels and senior communities before and after he owned the restaurant and catering company. Read more »

Crepes are wrapped up like sandwiches at Occasions Coffee and Crepes in Gig Harbor.

Today, I’m continuing my series on hidden gem restaurants – little cafes tucked inside office buildings, scrunched between bigger businesses, or operating out of other businesses. The common theme is they’re difficult to find and seem to operate just under the South Sound culinary radar.
