Restaurant updates: German restaurant and pub still a go, Puyallup and Tacoma openings on the way

News of Veltins Bierhalle, a German pub and eatery, opening in downtown Tacoma  made me eager for schnitzel and dunkel, but we’re still waiting for that opening. The good news – it’s still a go, but with a caveat. An opening has been pushed to 2014. And remember that downtown Puyallup Louisiana-themed eatery that’s been in the works for months and months? It’s opening soon. An Italian restaurant and a pub also are closer to opening in downtown Tacoma. Here are updates on all. Read more »

Thirsty Thursday: Checking in with Jason Alexander of Tacoma Cabana

Today, I’m starting an occasional series I’m calling Thirsty Thursday where I check in with Tacoma brewers, cocktail slingers, sommeliers and other Tacomans who work with booze. Today’s Q&A is with Jason Alexander, the king of Tacoma tiki drinks and co-owner of Tacoma Cabana with business and life partner Robyn Murphy.

Alexander collected a cocktail following in Tacoma when he was bartending at Villa Cafe and Imbibery, the restaurant he and Murphy opened in 2010 before opening Tacoma Cabana in October 2012. At Villa, Alexander developed his own style of blending fresh squeezed fruit juices with housemade

Opening today: A new steakhouse and country-rock bar, more nightclubs will follow

Finding a great steak in downtown Tacoma isn’t much of a chore, thanks to El Gaucho and Pacific Grill. What is more difficult to find is a grilled steak that doesn’t require an expense account. That’s where Steel Creek, Tacoma’s newest steakhouse and country-rock club, intends to nab diners. Steel Creek opens today at 1114 Broadway. The country-rock bar will serve steaks that are certified Angus. Cooking them will be a chef familiar to South Sounders.

Looking ahead, there are several nightclubs about to open downtown – most offering live music. Take a tour of what’s coming next, including an upscale martini bar with jazz and blues, a dueling piano bar, a tiki lounge that just expanded to offer live reggae and trop-rock. I’ve got the details on a new Sixth Avenue live music venue opening this month, too.

Tiki when? Tacoma Cabana opens Wednesday

A delay with a liquor license transfer meant a delay for tiki drinks and pupu platters in downtown Tacoma, but now that wait is over. Tacoma Cabana owner Robyn Murphy announced the liquor license has been granted and the downtown restaurant and lounge will open Wednesday at 4 p.m. The restaurant did have a soft opening for a downtown pub crawl over the weekend (they served food, not cocktails). Tiki update: Tacoma Cabana a few weeks from opening downtown

The new downtown Tacoma tiki restaurant and lounge Tacoma Cabana had expected to open two weeks ago – as I wrote in this article – but a short delay with a liquor permit most likely means a mid-October opening, said owner Robyn Murphy, who will operate the lounge and restaurant with Jason Alexander. Tiki lounge downtown: Tacoma Cabana opens this month on Pacific Avenue

Tacoma Cabana, a tiki lounge and restaurant, will open in downtown Tacoma this month. Restaurateurs Robyn Murphy and Jason Alexander are familiar faces downtown for their Villa Caffe and Imbibery, which they operated at the base of the Villaggio Apartments from January 2010 until last month.

They’ll open Tacoma Cabana in the next two weeks at 728 Pacific Ave., which previously was home to Surreal Ultra Lounge and On The Rocks before that.

Their previous restaurant Villa was a diminutive cafe that seated 24 and came with a tiny kitchen. Tacoma Cabana is triple the space and outfitted with a more substantially sized kitchen, Murphy said. The dining area has capacity for 74, but Murphy and Alexander plan to keep seating at 60. They’ve removed the glitzy club interior of the previous tenant and replaced it with Polynesian decor, the room is decorated with the tongue-in-cheek tropical tackiness that is a hallmark of tiki culture. They outfitted the bar to look like a hut, a surfboard hangs in the dining room. Read more »
