Planning an outdoor beer festival in May can be a soggy endeavor in the Pacific Northwest.

When the inaugural Gig Harbor Beer Festival last year collided with one of the first really sunny and hot weekends of 2012, the festival found itself in trouble when droves of people showed up to take advantage of two rare things: hot weather before July 4 and one of only a few craft beer festivals held in the South Sound. Don’t put it past craft brewers to do weird things to beer, given the invitation. Tacoma’s first winter Big Beer Festival Saturday is all about big flavors, although a first glance at the pour list shows nothing sounds as weird as what you’ll find at Port Townsend Strange Brewfest.

Organizers announced the lineup of brewers who will pour at the Big Beer Festival, held Feb. 16 in Tacoma. The Big Beer Festival is named after the big flavored brews that will be on the tap list. The festival is from the same people who throw the Tacoma Craft Beer Festival every summer.

When: Feb. 16. Two sessions, noon-4 p.m. and 4:30-8:30 p.m.

Beer bloggers are throwing around words like “shocking” to describe the loss of the sought-after double IPA from California’s Russian River Brewing – Pliny The Elder. The brewery informed its Washington customers recently that it no longer will be distributing its beers here. Different bits of information have appeared giving insight into why the brewery made the decision. A letter the brewery sent to distributors was published here. The final word from the brewery Jan. 4 on their Facebook page was that demand had outpaced supply. Sounds like a decent problem to have.

Morgan Alexander’s brewery is so small, he calls it a sub-microbrewery. He operates a quarter barrel system out of his coffee cafe, Amocat, which aptly spells Tacoma if you flip the letters. Visitors to Tacoma Brewing Co. will find new kegs tapped every Friday night. Like the coffee he brews by day, the craft beer Alexander creates is an extension of his self-described foodie side – most everything he brews is with good grub in mind.

When it rains, it pours. Or, more accurately, several bars and restaurants are pouring different styles of adult beverages today and tomorrow. Amocat Cafe’s Morgan Alexander is getting his brand new brewery Tacoma Brewing Co. off the ground with a tapping at his St. Helens neighborhood cafe. Several South Sound brewers will debut new beers this Saturday at the fourth annual Tacoma Craft Beer Festival.

Tacoma’s Engine House No. 9 will have a barrel blend that E9 brewer Shane Johns described as “made up of three beers aged in a Woodinville whiskey barrel.” Wingman Brewers, also of Tacoma, will debut its new Single Hop Sauvin IPA.
