Small bites, big flavors. Three Tacoma restaurants for group dining

Shareable plates of sophisticated cocktail food with world flavors. An excellent cocktail, wine or tap list. Upscale digs. A place where grown-ups can gather comfortably without fear of being shushed.

That’s the checklist a reader handed me for a place to take out-of-town guests visiting during the final days of summer. So I went looking — and eating, and sipping.

I stuck with lounges and bars known for pairing upscale cuisine with thoughtful adult beverages, but also destinations with accoutrements necessary for gatherings: a sizable list of shareable plates, communal seating that can shrink or expand with the size of the party, a generous happy hour, and an atmosphere conducive for a group of talkers.

Finding a destination for a little grownup R&R is easier today than it’s ever been around the region.

Coming this spring to the Foss Waterway – Paesan Kitchen and Bar

A new wood-fired pizza restaurant will open this spring on the Foss Waterway. The owners of Social Bar and Grill plan a May debut for their new project – Paesan Kitchen & Bar. The restaurant will operate in the same building as Social, in the street-facing space that until earlier this month housed Dock Street Sandwich Company. Read more »

Desserts that have gone bananas on South Sound menus

I love a banana split made with housemade ice cream. This one comes from Boathouse 19 in Tacoma.

Baked into a bread, sliced for a sundae or turned into a pudding – I’ve noticed so many more banana desserts on menus this summer. Some are so good, they may bump Corina Bakery’s banana pudding – which I’ve nicknamed “banana crack” – off the top of my dessert list. Read on. Read more »

Slider cook-off: 7 Tacoma area restaurants compete Saturday at Museum of Glass

Seven Tacoma area restaurants will vie for bragging rights to the best sliders in town Saturday night (March 3, 2012) at Shake, Rattle and Grill, a Museum of Glass event.

I asked participating restaurants what kind of mini-sandwiches they’d be cooking. Here’s what they reported. I also assembled my own self-directed slider competition and came up with sliders you can try anytime at South Sound restaurants. Tacoma gets a new waterfront restaurant. Social Bar and Grill will open on the Foss Waterway

Three alumni of Matador are opening a craft cocktail lounge and small plates restaurant on the Foss waterway. Social Bar and Grill will open in the space that formerly housed Woody’s On The Water until its January closure. Look for a July-ish opening for Social, said co-owner Philip Panagos, who most recently worked as the general manager of Tacoma’s Matador.

Opening the restaurant with Panagos is Jason Bailey, who was the manager of Paddy Coyne’s until April this year; before that, he worked for Matador for five years on the opening crew for five of the chain’s restaurants. Panagos and Bailey will own and operate the restaurant with Rodel Borromeo, who until recently was Matador’s corporate executive chef.

Social intends to be just that. Shareable pitchers of sangria and mojitos, and shareable appetizer plates will create the convivial vibe the restaurant owners have in mind. Read more »
