First-bite report: Tacoma’s Smoke + Cedar

The prime rib grabbed my attention and held it for several bites – until that awkward moment when I sensed my dining partner might forcibly reclaim the entree.

“Jus one merrr bite,” I might have murmured, mouth full of the juicy beef.

Supple and lightly charred from a finish with a blowtorch – yes, a blowtorch – the prime rib might as well be called “beef velvet” at Smoke + Cedar, the Tacoma restaurant from Gordon Naccarato that opened March 1 at the new Elks Lodge at Allenmore Golf Course (open to the public). It’s Tacoma’s newest view restaurant, with a lush course-side perch. Read more »

Coming in early 2014 – Smoke + Cedar, a restaurant from Tacoman Gordon Naccarato

Update March 2014: Tacoma’s Smoke + Cedar is now open. Read this blog post for more details.

Opening in early 2014 will be another restaurant from Pacific Grill owner and Tacoma native Gordon Naccarato.

The 165-seat restaurant is under construction at the Allenmore Golf Course in the new Elks lodge space, which was built after Elks members sold their previous lodge across the street to a developer. That site now houses a Wal-Mart.

In keeping with his penchant for naming his restaurants with a nod to their locations, Naccarato is calling his newest venture Smoke + Cedar, which will be located just off South 19th and Cedar streets.

At the cooking helm of Smoke + Cedar will be a chef familiar to Tacomans. Read more »

Dig into a classic – Pacific Grill in downtown Tacoma

Sue Kidd checks in on Pacific Grill, one of Tacoma’s finest eateries, run by Tacoma native Gordon Naccarato. As the holiday season unfolds and diners search for locations to celebrate, Pacific Grill should top their lists.

New fall menu: Pacific Grill

Pacific Grill, the downtown Tacoma restaurant that just celebrated its seventh anniversary in August, broadens its flavors this fall with a pork tenderloin stew with chickpeas, fennel, coriander and something I adore: Greek yogurt with the Middle Eastern spice za’atar ($19.95). What else is on the new fall menu? Read more »

Finally, summer. At least on the dinner menu at Pacific Grill

In true Northwest fashion, our spring was really, really rainy (no way, really??). That’s why I’ve been looking more than ever for summer flavors on local restaurant tables. Something, anything to drive away the gray gloom, right?

Here’s what I was looking for – the lightened up summer menu at Pacific Grill. I liked the looks of a fried chicken dinner with smoked sweet potato salad, a summer hanger steak salad with a lime-ginger vinaigrette and pork chile verde. Take a look at the new menus that Pacific Grill just started serving. Read more »

Yum on a bun: Five more Tacoma bar burgers to try before you die

It took months and three bottles of Tums to recover from last December’s bar burger series. Remember that? I wrote about the 20 burgers you have to eat before you die (or die trying).

This time, I took a considerably smaller bite out of Tacoma’s bar burger footprint: Five more bar burgers you should add to your list of must-try-or-die burgers around town.

Just don’t tell your doctor before you embark on your eating project. Click “read more” to see my top five bar burgers of the moment. Read more »

Pacific Grill debuts new menus and brings back the half-off bar menu pricing during happy hour

Pacific Grill in downtown Tacoma debuted its new lunch, dinner and happy hour menus late last month. I was scrolling through the menus and saw something interesting on the dinner menu: A “Sunday gravy” meat sauce inspired by Bimbo’s, the legendary Italian restaurant that operated on Pacific in downtown Tacoma until September 2001 when the city bought some of the recipes and the name Bimbo’s. That summary of Bimbo’s history you just read, of course, grossly simplifies the complicated and meandering Bimbo’s story, but I’ll save the details for another blog post some other time.

Click “more” for a look at some of the dinner and happy hour menus. Bargain seekers: Bar menu pricing at Pacific Grill is back to half-off during happy hours. Sign me up for a half-off Cuban sandwich and Pacific Grill sliders. Read more »
