Oktoberfest Northwest is on.

In its ninth year at the Washington State Fair Event Center, the weekend-long festival is an ode to German beer, food and entertainment. It’s happening today and tomorrow, check below for hours.

Lining the wall of the Showplex are a handful of restaurants, with a few kiosks serving food closer to the entertainment stage and communal seating area. Read below for what I ate and what was worth the money (and what was not). Read more »

The first week in October brings a true struggle for a hired belly in the South Sound.

Schnitzel first? Or gyros and souvlaki?

Can I really stuff my face full of bratwurst, pickle soup, potato pancakes, souvlaki, gyros, baklava, calamari, skordalia sauce and Greek coffee – deep breath – all in a single afternoon? And live to write about it?

You bet I can. And I do. Every year. Because the volunteer-run Greek Festival in Tacoma and the ode to German eats and brew at Oktoberfest Northwest in Puyallup are what I consider the region’s finest food festivals. I’ll have live coverage of both right here on the good ol’ world famous TNT Diner blog.

That both food festivals are the same weekend gives me grief because they both deserve your attendance, but if I only had time or money to go to one, I’d stick with the Greek Festival. Because, well, baklava.

Oktoberfest Northwest: Beers, brats and wiener dog races today

Beer is on the menu at the Oktoberfest Northwest, held Oct. 5-7 2012 at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.

Today is the final day of Oktoberfest Northwest – a three-day celebration of beer, brats and German dancing and singing. I checked in at the festival yesterday afternoon at the Puyallup Fairgrounds Showplex. Today is a great day to go because admission is half-price all day -  $5 gets you in. Oktoberfest: All the brats and beer you can stand at five festivals

Schnitzel, spaetzle and beer. Do I really need to write anything more to get your attention?

I thought not. Oktoberfests big and small are planned this weekend and next throughout the South Sound. They’re festivals celebrating German beer and food – held in conjunction with the weeks-long Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, the world’s largest fair devoted to beer. Around here, there’s the little European cafe Bruno’s in Parkland that will serve its exceptional German menu and a few specially selected beers for a two-day Oktoberfest. Oh, and they’ll have a chicken dance contest (pack your camera). Harmon Brewery has a bring-your-own-mug night where they’ll pour their beer into your cup. Tacoma’s Wingman Brewers will debut a few Oktoberfest brews. And then there’s the biggest Oktoberfest of them all: The three-day Oktoberfest Northwest at the Puyallup Fairgrounds that is an homage to all things German food and beer. Read more »
