Call it third helpings.

A re-dine. A do-over.

One of my favorite things to do as this paper’s hired belly is to tell success stories about restaurants that have pulled a great turnaround.

In 2013, we saw a cascade of openings that made the South Sound a more robust dining region. While some restaurants nailed the concept on their first try, others proved they required more time to settle into their kitchens.

This Friday and next, I’ll be writing about third helpings of restaurants that debuted in 2013 with concepts I applauded, but with shaky early deliveries.

Second bites: Netshed No. 9 in Gig Harbor, Whitehouse Restaurant in Bonney Lake

The Whitehouse makes it easy to cut your burger, the kitchen stabs a knife right into the center for you, before serving.

When new restaurants open, occasionally I’ll find flustered service or a kitchen producing less-than-stellar results. That’s why I return for a second visit to test whether the restaurant is suffering the usual aches of fledgling restaurants, or if there’s a bigger problem. Unlike diners who turn to review websites to post “I hate you! So there!” assessments after a single visit, newspaper critics who follow AFJ standards always return to the scene of the crime a second, third or fourth time. First bites: Art House Cafe in Stadium and Netshed No 9 in Gig Harbor

Eating at the dining counter at Art House Cafe is like watching a live cooking show, only better because Neapolitan-style pizza and freshly baked English muffins go straight from the oven to your belly.

A nine-seat perch yields an unfettered view of chef Dustin Joseph sautéing, frying, slicing and dicing alongside his culinary team. Virtually every kitchen staffer is part of Art House’s kitchen theater, including the dishwasher. Read more »


Opening Thursday: Netshed No. 9 in Gig Harbor

Netshed No. 9  – Gig Harbor’s newest waterfront restaurant – will open Thursday. The restaurant will operate at 3313 Harborview Drive. The menu is all about breakfast – listing everything from sourdough ricotta pancakes to chicken and waffles, stuffed biscuit sandwiches, sausage breakfast burgers with tomato jam, chilaquiles, ham steak, frittatas, scambles and waffles made on 100-year-old waffle irons.  Read more »


Breakfast restaurant Netshed No. 9 coming to Gig Harbor waterfront in March

Gig Harbor diners, you’re about to get a new waterfront breakfast destination – brought to you by the owners of Gig Harbor’s Brix 25.

Expect a March opening for Netshed  No. 9 at 3313 Harborview Drive.

Husband-wife team Thad Lyman and Katie Doherty – Northwest natives who bought Brix 25 four years ago after operating restaurants in Napa Valley – plan an all-day breakfast menu that includes skillet-baked cinnamon rolls, scratch-made English muffins, chicken and waffles, sourdough pancakes and what Doherty described as “true” crispy hash browns.
