A few weeks ago, I reported here that executive chef Matt Colony had left Maxwell’s Restaurant & Lounge to run two restaurants in Poulsbo. Taking over the helm of Maxwell’s will be Vivian Irish, a young chef and Tacoma native who got her culinary start at Pacific Grill under the direction of Aaron Valimont, former executive chef, and Pacific Grill owner Gordon Naccarato. Irish also is a graduate of the Tacoma School of the Arts.

Rumor mill: Maxwell’s Restaurant + Lounge is not closing. Yes, that means you can still get a Walker burger.

The buzz on Twitter yesterday was that Maxwell’s Restaurant + Lounge was rumored to be closing.

Not so says Executive Chef Matt Colony, who also runs the daily operations at Maxwell’s. If the restaurant is closing, that’s news to him. That’s good news for us burger lovers. The Walker Burger lives. (Not to mention the divine farro risotto of which I am newly obsessed).

Thick and towering, goosed with flavor, diminutive and tasty. Today’s bar burgers were the best of the best for flavor, texture and ingredients that I sampled for this week’s 20-burger salute to South Sound bars, taverns and breweries.

Chorizo, Nueske’s bacon, arugula and Gorgonzola – today’s burgers all feature unusual twists that made them memorable. And what’s better than a burger? A burger with fries (just add beer). If you’re a fan of fries, today’s installment is devoted to you.

Restaurant nibbles: More spring menus, a free wine tasting and a burrito eating contest

From my reporter’s notebook today, a few new things: Pacific Grill has a new spring menu, Cork Wine Bar has a free wine tasting this afternoon, HG Bistro is now serving lunch and Maxwell’s is serving up some interesting sounding Mexican dishes on Cinco de Mayo.

Cork Wine Bar on Sixth Avenue is pouring four wines today at a free tasting that starts at 5 p.m. From Cork’s Facebook page, “We will be pouring four wines from Waving Tree… a Washington winery sourcing their grapes from Columbia Valley.. a Barbera, Sangiovese, Zin, and an Orange Muscat.” Find …
