Finally open: It’s Greek To Me in Tacoma moves across the street

It was just a move across the street – but the details of packing up It’s Greek To Me and shuttling it a few hundred feet – overnight – were complex. It required free labor from friends, quickly tearing down and reassembling equipment and as owner Jim Wick put it, working stealthily like “Greek ninjas” through Sunday night into dawn Monday.

The restaurant began serving gyros and pizza yesterday afternoon in its new location at 1702 Sixth Ave.

Plans for the move began last spring Read more »

Coming later this year: Greek restaurants in Westgate and Puyallup

The new home for My Greek, which is moving from its Meridian home to Sunrise Village, also in South Hill.

My Greek, a restaurant that operated for five years in Puyallup’s South Hill, has found a new home – in two locations. One is in Sunrise Village, not far from the original Puyallup location, the other is in Tacoma’s Westgate neighborhood.

Owner Nader Morcos said he is estimating a December opening for the Westgate restaurant and a January opening for the Puyallup My Greek, which will be taking over the space formerly occupied by the conveyor belt sushi restaurant, Sushi Station. In Westgate, the restaurant will operate at the old Shari’s, 2303 N. Pearl St. Read more »

Gyros update: It’s Greek to Me move on schedule for Jan. 1, Greek festival this weekend

Two important things for your gyro radar: The annual Greek festival at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church is this Friday through Sunday. I’ll have a complete story with tips for how to eat around the festival this Friday, but for now, here’s another important gyros update – It’s Greek To Me is on schedule with its move across the street. It’s Greek To Me is on the move – same gyros, just across the street

You won’t have to eat in your car anymore – unless you want to. It’s Greek To Me will move later this year across the street to a location that will have a single digit address change – 1702 Sixth Ave. The new space will triple the dining room of the tiny drive-up stand Jim Wick has operated on the edge of the Sixth Avenue business district for more than 20 years. Greek on the move: It’s Greek To Me opens an offshoot restaurant in Puyallup. And it’s swanky.

The gyros at It’s Greek To Me Puyallup.

In Jim Wick’s words, his new restaurant in downtown Puyallup is “sort of swanky.” I’d say that’s a pretty good way to describe It’s Greek To Me Puyallup, which opened last Monday in the space that formerly housed DeCaterina’s Market Grill and Bar (and From the Bayou before that).

If the restaurant’s name sounds familiar that’s because it’s an offshoot restaurant from Tacoma’s It’s Greek To Me, the hole-in-the-wall drive-in/walk-in Greek restaurant that Wick opened in 1991 in that tiny little building just off that weird little intersection where Sixth meets Division meets Sprague.

The Puyallup restaurant wasn’t Wick’s idea. A consultant hired by the city solicited Wick and a handful of other restaurateurs to lease the city-owned space. The process was several months long and the finalists, besides It’s Greek To Me, included a barbecue restaurant, seafood concept and a bistro. When the city council, the decision makers, evaluated the candidates, It’s Greek To Me won the lease. Read more »

Greek on the move: Johnnie’s Greek Cafe moves to another Lakewood location and changes its name

Moussaka at the Greek Cafe is a casserole of garlic perfumed eggplant, seasoned ground beef and topped with bechamel.

The 48th annual Greek Festival begins Friday at Tacoma’s St. Nicholas church, but I couldn’t wait to reek of Greek. And neither should you.

Before, during or after the annual Greek food festival this weekend, get your fill of moussaka and gyros at two South Sound Greek restaurants that are on the move: It’s Greek To Me and the Greek Café. Read more »
