Gourmet Burger Shop opens in downtown Gig Harbor

Don't you want a bacon cheeseburger now?
Don’t you want a bacon cheeseburger now?

After a few months of delays, the Gourmet Burger Shop opened Friday in its new downtown Gig Harbor location.

Owner Travis Hightower has been working on the space all year (it was previously occupied by Le Bistro before a fire closed that restaurant in 2010).

In April, Hightower  closed his first hole-in-the-wall burger shop. That spot always felt a mismatch – a painfully tiny roadside spot serving upscale burgers, shoestring garlic-herb fries and beet chips that seemed as if they’d be more at home on Sixth Avenue than a remote location beyond the Purdy Spit. A scenic drive along State Route 302 funnels diners to a quirky building with outdoor seating serving some of the best burgers on that side of the Narrows bridge. Chef-owner Travis Hightower turns out towering burgers made with hand-formed patties – built on glossy buns from the nearby 3 Clouds Bakery. Read more »

Burger watch: Dirty Oscar’s Annex in Tacoma and Gourmet Burger Shop on the Key Peninsula

One is a bar, the other is a burger shack. Both make decidedly upscale burgers with value in mind. Certified Angus beef, fresh-cut fries – magic words for burger and fries lovers. They sucked me in, and I left impressed. Dirty Oscar’s Annex on Tacoma’s Sixth Avenue and the Gourmet Burger Shop in Gig Harbor both opened in recent months. Both should be on your burger radar. Click “more” to read about them.

NEXT WEEK: I’ll tell you about four more burgers you should put on your burger radar. I’m out of the office on leave next week (I advance wrote the blog posts just for you!), but will return June 13. Until then, if you have rumors to check out, or restaurant tips to give, post ‘em here. Read more »
