You know you hate baking when you resort to trickery to pass store-bought cookies off as your own.

I read a post on a food blog that suggested skillet cooking grocery store cookies to make them appear more “buttery.” It also suggested applying canned frosting asymmetrically to give the illusion of a real home-baked cookie.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to bake the cookies?

Well, for some bake-o-phobes, I guess that answer would be a big, fat no.

Desserts that have gone bananas on South Sound menus

I love a banana split made with housemade ice cream. This one comes from Boathouse 19 in Tacoma.

Corina Bakery settles into a new Tacoma location

When Molly Ott bought Corina Bakery in 2008, she didn’t think all that much about the stairs that separated the bakery from the storefront – until she had to maneuver 80-pound wedding cakes and 50-pound bags of flour up and down those stairs.

She also didn’t anticipate she would grow the bakery so successfully that she would outgrow the small footprint in less than four years.

Two weeks ago, she packed up the bakery near the corner of South Sixth Avenue and Tacoma Avenue South and moved down below – mere steps away – to a larger space next door to The Grand Cinema. Read more »


Sweets on Sixth: Burning Cupcakes opens on Sixth Avenue, Buck Naked Donuts is on its way and Corina Bakery continues to produce stellar sweet treats

When Taressa Neal was selling candles for a living, she baked cupcakes for clients as gifts. She called them “burning” cupcakes.

The cupcakes lasted, the candles didn’t. The name stuck.

Last Saturday, Neal opened Burning Cupcakes in a small, low-slung building near Sixth Avenue and Stevens in the space that formerly housed Kitchen2Kitchen, a meals ready/catering outfit. Neal opened Burning Cupcakes with business partner JoAnn McCullon, who handles the operation side of the business while Neal is chief baker.

Soup for you! Infinite Soups turns three

Happy anniversary to Infinite Soups. Tomorrow, Feb. 27, marks the third anniversary for the take-out soup kitchens that niche specialize in soup and nothing else. Like last year, they’ll celebrate with cupcakes from Corina Bakery. They invite all to stop by and get one. To mark their second anniversary, they’ll also launch new hours for their second location, which now will be open on Saturdays.
