Tourist Tacoma: Surf-and-turf restaurants with waterfront views

From the Foss Waterway to Ruston, from Titlow Beach to Chambers Bay, South Sound’s waterways are dotted with restaurants boasting this-is-why-we-live-here views.

In the final installment of my Tourist Tacoma series, I’m suggesting where to take out-of-town diners to impress upon them that our water views are better than, well, anything they might have back home. (So there.)

I’m recommending restaurants that have proved their prowess for consistent dining — no matter the price tag. I cover broad territory here with everything from cheap fish and chips to surf and turf that’s best enjoyed with an expense account.

Tastings: Belgian beer at The Red Hot Tacoma, Cidery tastes at 208 Garfield, Beer tapping at Tacoma’s newest brewery

When it rains, it pours. Or, more accurately, several bars and restaurants are pouring different styles of adult beverages today and tomorrow. Amocat Cafe’s Morgan Alexander is getting his brand new brewery Tacoma Brewing Co. off the ground with a tapping at his St. Helens neighborhood cafe. In other beverage happenings, 208 Garfield in Parkland has a cidery tasting and The Red Hot – Tacoma’s favorite emporium for craft beer and hot dogs – will have a Belgian fest tonight with its Coast to Coast Belgium beer tasting. Brewer’s dinner: Harmon Brewery at Chambers Bay Grill

Harmon Brewing Company and Chambers Bay Grill have teamed up to brew beer. The Chambers Bay Ale is a collaboration between the Tacoma brewery and the restaurant in University Place with one of my favorite views in the region. The restaurant and brewery will debut the ale at a dinner this Friday.

Seven Tacoma area restaurants will vie for bragging rights to the best sliders in town Saturday night (March 3, 2012) at Shake, Rattle and Grill, a Museum of Glass event.

I asked participating restaurants what kind of mini-sandwiches they’d be cooking. Here’s what they reported. I also assembled my own self-directed slider competition and came up with sliders you can try anytime at South Sound restaurants. (UPDATE: The event is close to selling out, call the museum for availability). Read more »

Chambers Bay Grill: A restaurant with food and a view that will make you swoon

"To family!" was the toast of far-flung members of the Gee family as they gathered at Chambers Bay Grill. The patio has a wide view of Chambers Bay Links and Puget Sound. Photo by Peter Haley / Staff photographer

I didn’t want to finish this dining report.

Sorry again, boss, for blowing the deadline. Twice.

I wanted to keep visiting the hidden treasure that Chambers Bay Grill is just one more time. Also, I don’t like fighting people for tables. Or at least I don’t want to for the next week or so. Like the rest of the grounds around Chambers Bay, the Chambers Bay Grill will be closed for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 20-29. After that, we can duke it out for that sweet table in the left corner of the patio.

Chambers Bay Grill, if you didn’t know already, is a Northwest spun restaurant that sits atop a bluff that yields awe-inspiring views of McNeil, Anderson, Ketron and Fox islands. Read more »

Restaurant nibbles: New restaurants opening, a wine tasting and a wine dinner menu

From my reporter’s notebook, I’ve collected all kinds of odds and ends in the South Sound restaurant world: The opening of the Harmon Tap Room is next week, Bella Kitchen Essentials cooking store is opening May 22 in Gig Harbor, the tea room at the Urban Exchange opened this week. Also, there are plenty of events happening. Farrelli’s is hosting dough tossing classes, Chambers Bay Grill is holding its first wine dinner and there’s a spring wine tasting in Ashford next weekend.
