Downtown Tacoma’s finest entertainment corridor percolates between Seventh and Ninth on Pacific Avenue. Consider it equally fit for nightlife seekers or daytime lunch grubbers.

At night, there’s the tiki bar Tacoma Cabana with handcrafted cocktails from Jason Alexander and island-themed “vacation fusion” eats from Robyn Murphy. The Tex-Mex restaurant Matador has a knock-out tequila list. The casual pubs Meconi’s, The Forum and The Office compete for the same crowd, but each display distinct identities.

The excellent Orange Door Vietnamese bistro and the lunch buffet at India Mahal get my vote for noon dining.
And then there’s that fun spot for kids of all ages, Dorky’s Arcade, with pinball machines from an era when we wanted our hair and music equally big and obnoxious.

It gets better. Two promising brewery-taprooms — Odd Otter Brewing Co., and Pacific Brewing and Malting Co. — are expected this summer.

Kevin Cornwell was smart for planting his casual Italian eatery in the middle of that stretch. He opened Cafe Vincero April 23 at 714 Pacific Ave. Cornwell, a South Sound native whose first restaurant job was working at Vince’s Italian Restaurant, carved a beautiful restaurant into the narrow space that previously held a retail shop. Coming to downtown Tacoma: Italian eatery Cafe Vincero and two brewers, Pacific Brewing and Odd Otter

Grill ChillPacific Avenue is about to become even more robust for brew, wine and dining. When Cafe Vincero opens in April – permits willing – it will be followed by two breweries in downtown Tacoma. Pacific Brewing and Malting expects a spring opening and the newest brewer on the block, Odd Otter Brewing Company, expects to be brewing this summer.

That particular stretch of Pacific Avenue around Seventh and Ninth already is home to a number of entertainment choices, more than half opened in the last two years. The tiki bar Tacoma Cabana, Dorky’s Arcade, the Tex-Mex eatery Matador and the Vietnamese restaurant Orange Door are steps from Cafe Vincero. Also nearby are three other bars – The Office, Meconi’s and The Forum. Around the corner – cocktail bar and comedy club, 502 Downtown. Here’s a look at what’s opening next, with opening dates: Read more »

Restaurant updates: German restaurant and pub still a go, Puyallup and Tacoma openings on the way

News of Veltins Bierhalle, a German pub and eatery, opening in downtown Tacoma  made me eager for schnitzel and dunkel, but we’re still waiting for that opening. The good news – it’s still a go, but with a caveat. An opening has been pushed to 2014. And remember that downtown Puyallup Louisiana-themed eatery that’s been in the works for months and months? It’s opening soon. An Italian restaurant and a pub also are closer to opening in downtown Tacoma. Here are updates on all. Read more »

Opening update: Cafe Vincero in downtown Tacoma applies for liquor permit

By now, Kevin Cornwell had hoped to be serving paninis, pizza and pasta at his new downtown Tacoma eatery, Cafe Vincero. But he ran into a problem, then another, and another. The problems centered around the footprint of his restaurant. The design needed adjusting to meet fire and safety codes.

One requirement was particularly pesky. He’d have to shrink the square footage of his dining space to meet occupancy standards. What to do with all that empty space that formerly was to be seating? Cornwell’s solution – a wine cellar. Read more »
