How cold is too cold for beer?

TNT Diner reader Barley Jim posted in this thread on the new Hop Jack’s restaurant in Bonney Lake that he was chagrined to be served a beer slushee at the restaurant. More specifically, he wrote, “The kid behind the bar took a VERY frozen glass and poured beer from a tap that had a 1 inch thick coating of ice all over it! The result was a beer slurpy! You Know… SLUSH! My beer foamed momentarily, gasping it’s last breath then turned to slush 1-2inches deep! DEAD! My beer was now DEAD, DEAD! ANYONE WHO LIKES BEER WOULD TELL

Admission is $18 in advance, $20 day of event; must be 21 or older to attend

The second beer event is Maltoberfest, a significantly more quirky and little known beer gathering paying homage to malt liquor. Yes, that’s right, malt liquor. It also takes place Saturday (Oct. 3), at Bob’s Java Jive.

So I asked organizer Craig Egan, who with Jen Orr founded Maltoberfest, to answer a few questions about malt liquor and Maltoberfest IV. Specifically, what kind of food do you pair with malt liquor? First Bite: Hop Jack’s in Bonney Lake

I stopped in for beer (really, really cold beer) and dinner at Hop Jack’s, which opened Aug. 10 in Bonney Lake last month. I wanted to test two things: just how cold is the beer, and just how family friendly is a neighborhood restaurant that appears to have an awful lot of 21-and-over bar seating in proportion to dining room seating.

ZZHop commemorates RAM brewer

Another item from my inbox. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer goes to the brewer’s family …

The Ram Restaurant and Brewery is celebrating the life and brews of James ’Jim’ Patrick Quilter. …  Jim was a venerable brewer with a long and lustrous career. He began home brewing in the early ‘80’s, attracted by the economic benefits, and  was soon winning awards for his recipes. In 1990 he started brewing for Sierra Nevada followed by stints at Mad River, Butte Creek and Winthrop Brewing Company. In 2004 he started Iron Horse Brewery in Ellensburg,
