First-bite report: Aviateur French Diner, downtown Tacoma’s new French cafe

30goeatsIn the South Sound, we’re short on a few styles of food and the restaurants that serve them.

One shortage is an authentic Jewish deli — with house-cured pastrami, knishes and rugelach. I frequently play a fun game I call “assemble my own deli,” threading together a meal from various stops.

And aside from a 25-minute drive to a small dinner-only cafe in Steilacoom, La Creme Brulee, I’ve had to play a similar game called “assemble my own French bistro.” Beef bourguignon at Brix 25 and steamed mussels and fries at Pacific Grill filled that void.

Then came Aviateur French Diner, which opened in early April in downtown Tacoma, a restaurant offering bistro classics — and serious potential. Read more »

First look: Menus at newly opened Aviateur in downtown Tacoma

Aviateur French Diner opened last week, bringing French bistro fare to a  downtown dining space in the Umpqua Bank building that’s been empty more than it’s been occupied. Aviateur is owned by Bertrand Young, who also operates the French bistro La Creme Brulee in Steilacoom. Now open in downtown Tacoma – Aviateur French Diner

Aviateur French Diner is now open in downtown Tacoma at 1498 Pacific Ave.

The restaurant is from Bertrand Young, who has operated the French bistro La Creme Brulee in Steilacoom for eight years. Aviateur will be open for dinner and bar service Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but will be closed Sunday and Monday. Dinner and bar service will resume Tuesday-Saturday next week (See hours below). Liquor application: Aviateur in downtown Tacoma

Downtown Tacoma restaurant watchers take note of this high-profile space: An application for a liquor license has been filed with the state liquor control board for a restaurant called Aviateur at 1498 Pacific Ave. Read more »
