Hey, look. Free stuff. Steamers at Titlow Beach welcomes summer (briefly) with free ice cream today

The sun is out. For now, at least. It’s officially summer. Steamers Seafood Cafe at Titlow Beach in Tacoma is offering a free ice cream cone for diners from 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. today, June 21. The free scoop comes in a sugar cone and the flavor choices are (drum roll, please): vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, mint chip, cookies and cream, huckleberry, butter pecan and coffee almond fudge.

Is there a catch? Doesn’t appear so. I could find no fine print saying diners have to purchase anything to get the freebie. This looks like an actual and real something for free.

Cheap, good, fast: Mastering the art of the 5-minute takeout lunch in downtown Tacoma

The University Gyros House offers a bargain-priced $3.99 falafel sandwich.

Six bucks and five minutes. Some days, that’s all the commitment I want to give to lunch.

My go-to cheap-and-fast lunch spot long has been Freighthouse Square. With its revolving cast of restaurants, free parking and lunch deals squarely in the $6 range, it’s the ultimate in cheap, fast and (usually) good. The one drawback: don’t get too attached to a restaurant. Maybe it’s because it’s an incubator for tiny businesses, but the restaurant turnover at Freighthouse is exceptionally high.

I’ve been trying to spread out my geography for cheap lunches. I’ve had a few tips from TNT Diner readers, who suggested I dine at two new downtown Tacoma restaurants, University Gyros House and Happy Teriyaki, both located between 19th and 22nd on Pacific. I tried both, and I’m happy to report they were cheap, good, fast. Read more »

Free Cup Friday: Infinite Soups in Tacoma serves fall cheer in the form of a free cup of autumnal yum

Just in time for the autumnal chill, Infinite Soups is launching a handful of new Fall flavors.

And the small, plucky business – a micro niche restaurant that serves wonderfully executed soup and only soup – is starting what the restaurant’s owners are calling Free Cup Friday. Starting Sept. 10, anyone who asks for will receive a free cup of soup every Friday at the Sanford & Son location of Infinite Soups (not the Tacoma Avenue location). And the free cup offer is good every Friday until December.

“We’re doing it because my niece who works down there (at the Sanford & Son Infinite location), she’s excited because school is back in session and she wanted to do something nice for students,” said owner Wendy Clapp, who runs the two locations of Infinite Soups with husband Todd DeShazo and daughter Laura Adams. Lunch on the cheap: Three buck Vietnamese sandwiches

A search for parking turned me on to a really cheap $3 lunch today. I was intending to eat at Vien Dong, home to tasty, inexpensive Vietnamese soup. I turned right off 38th, looking for parking and found a surprise – a second Cafe La Vie tucked into a refurbished house in a residential street. It’s an outpost of the other Cafe La Vie on 38th.

The second Cafe La Vie has been open for about seven months and, like its sister restaurant around the corner, the menu is micro focused on Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches and Vietnamese coffee. The second location, however, is far more clean and spacious than its original counterpart.
