Craig Dickens had hoped to reopen the Ale House Pub & Eatery around the time the Seahawks season started. Well, the season – and an epic Super Bowl win (shameless plug alert) – have come and gone and the University Place pub and restaurant still sits dark after a devastating kitchen fire closed the restaurant in July 2013.

However, after a lengthy process, permits now are in hand and Dickens has hired a construction crew to begin the remodel. His new estimate? If all goes well, plan for a summer reopening. Read more »

Closing March 15 – Lobster Shop at Dash Point, in Northeast Tacoma

After 36 years in business, the Lobster Shop at Dash Point will close March 15.

“It’s really a financial decision,” said Katie Driscoll, who operates the Northeast Tacoma seafood restaurant with husband Denny Driscoll.

In recent years, finances have been tough, she said. Additionally, “we let the concept slide and get outdated,” said Driscoll. “We didn’t give it the attention it deserved.”

It’s time, she said, for someone else to take up residence in the space adjacent to a shoreline park that’s smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood. “It’s a great little spot and we’re hoping someone else

Fife City Bar and Grill closes

A reader inquired about the fate of Fife City Bar & Grill after seeing a sign for an auction of that restaurant’s equipment. I found a website announcement from Chef Diana Prine saying that she has closed her Fife restaurant. Below is the text of Prine’s farewell, which you also can read here. Something to note – she said she’s “excited for what lies ahead.” I hope to reach her by phone soon to find out what that is. Another restaurant in the works?  Check back for updates.

I am sorry as of September 13TH 2013 we have closed

The Ale House in University Place plans a September reopening

Here's one thing I'll look forward to when the Ale House near University Place reopens - beer samplers. The pub has 64 beers on tap, many of them are Northwest craft brews.

Opening today: A new steakhouse and country-rock bar, more nightclubs will follow

Finding a great steak in downtown Tacoma isn’t much of a chore, thanks to El Gaucho and Pacific Grill. What is more difficult to find is a grilled steak that doesn’t require an expense account. That’s where Steel Creek, Tacoma’s newest steakhouse and country-rock club, intends to nab diners. Steel Creek opens today at 1114 Broadway. The country-rock bar will serve steaks that are certified Angus. Cooking them will be a chef familiar to South Sounders.

Looking ahead, there are several nightclubs about to open downtown – most offering live music. Take a tour of what’s coming next, including an upscale martini bar with jazz and blues, a dueling piano bar, a tiki lounge that just expanded to offer live reggae and trop-rock. I’ve got the details on a new Sixth Avenue live music venue opening this month, too.

Cheers West restaurant closes June 1 – but expect a reopening

A city short on dining options looks to be losing one, although it’s expected to reopen. A sign has gone up announcing the closure of Cheers West, a bar and grill in University Place.

A manager who answered the phone said the restaurant would close June 1 and would reopen July 1 – in the same location – with new ownership. She said more details would be available Friday, but here’s sign of the new ownership.

A liquor permit has just been placed for a restaurant called Cheers West U.P. The permit lists Ali Akbar Mehdizadehkashi as the applicant.
