Baked into bread might be ideal for winter, but come summer, I want my bananas in a pudding, preferably layered with fresh-sliced bananas and Nilla Wafers (whole or crushed, I’m not picky). I’ve found three different puddings worth exploring around the South Sound. Take a look:
Lizzie Lou’s Too

The banana pudding ($2) at Lizzie Lou Too’s was so thickly whipped, the pudding gripped the spoon. Served in a plastic container – with a lid for easy transporting – the take-out dessert balanced intense banana flavor with modest sweetness. I appreciated the pudding-to-banana ratio in favor of pudding. Lizzie Lou’s is a month-old dining counter inside Destination Harley in Fife. The restaurant has a sibling business, the Lizzie Lou’s Comfort Food truck.

Southern Exposure’s banana pudding ($4) tasted like something straight out of your grandma’s kitchen. The pudding carried the texture and flavor of the ‘50s era puddings reminiscent of the boxed kind, the type with a looser, soft texture and heavy sweetness. The ratio skewed higher on bananas and wafers to pudding. Ours was still warm and tasted freshly made.

Dubbed “banana crack” around town, the bakery long has produced this plastic cup layered with thick pudding, fresh-sliced bananas and Nilla wafers. At $2.99 it’s a solid deal considering the cup’s big enough for sharing. Occasionally, they don’t have the pudding, so do call first. If they’re out, you can always pick out a brownie made with Valhalla Coffee ($2.75)
