Stuff your face: Taste of Tacoma is this weekend

Reach way back in the closet.

No, no.

All the way in the back.

You see those stain-resistant pants with the safe-for-Thanksgiving-dinner waistband?

Prepare to move them to the front of the closet.

This weekend is Taste of Tacoma.

The three-day eating festival that starts today at Point Defiance Park isn’t a gourmet food gathering, or even an event featuring much in the form of Tacoma restaurants.

Taste of Tacoma is about stuffing your face with carnival food that’s dipped in stuff, deep fried, and slathered in sauce. In other words, the festival is full of food crimes against humanity.

Five-buck lunch: Great sandwich find at Gyro Zone

Gyro Zone is a great stop for a five-buck lunch. The restaurant is in University Place.
Gyro Zone is a great stop for a five-buck lunch. The restaurant is in University Place.

Cheap, filling, no more than five bucks. That’s my must-have list for a weekday lunch. Today’s quest for a good deal took me to Gyro Zone, a casual cafe in University Place that will celebrate its first year of business July 20. Read more »

Burger lust: Chalk Talk Bistro in downtown Tacoma

A Secret Sauce Burger from Chalk Talk Bistro, $6.99, with fresh-cut fries.

My most recent burger journey took me to the newly made over Mary’s Burger Bistro in downtown Tacoma. Now called Chalk Talk, the burger joint got a dining room facelift with chalkboard walls for doodling and switched from griddled to flame-broiled burgers. Check it out: Read more »

Go explore: Port Orchard Public Market, a new destination filled with food finds

The newly opened Port Orchard Public Market opened with seven vendors, two of which are restaurants.

On the way down to Bay Street from State Route 16, I made an unexpected discovery about Port Orchard.

Convenience stores. The bank. Even the feed store. They all come with fetching, million-dollar waterfront views.
Port Orchard’s proximity to Sinclair Inlet made it an ideal waterside timber town, and it was the first Kitsap County city to incorporate in 1890.

And its current life still is rooted in its working waterfront.

Much of Bay Street’s businesses surround an active marina – with guest moorage – and in the middle of the business district is a foot ferry that shuttles explorers between Port Orchard and Bremerton.

New attractions along Bay Street make this town a quick half-day trip for eaters in search of a food adventure.
The newly opened Port Orchard Public Market was my first stop on a recent visit, followed by a handful of restaurants recommended by the locals. Read more »

Taco Tuesday in Tacoma: Try these from Hilltop Kitchen and Social Bar and Grill

Asparagus tacos from Hilltop Kitchen in Tacoma.
Asparagus tacos from Hilltop Kitchen in Tacoma.

With bars everywhere serving up taco Tuesday specials, I thought it time I started an occasional taco Tuesday spotlight. I’m searching beyond those ground beef tacos with the crunchy shells to find tacos with bigger flavors, better ingredients.

Today’s taco trip takes me to Hilltop Kitchen for veg-friendly candied lemon peel and asparagus tacos and tender-as-they-come steak tacos at Social Bar and Grill. Read more »

Mike Parker’s made a career cooking in bars, but his food’s not the typical prefab pub grub.

The Tacoma cook with 16 years experience cooking at popular Tacoma bars now has his own place – and it’s a restaurant within a bar. On Thursday, he opened Parker’s at O’Malley’s on Sixth Avenue. Read more »
