After 36 years in business, the Lobster Shop at Dash Point will close March 15.
“It’s really a financial decision,” said Katie Driscoll, who operates the Northeast Tacoma seafood restaurant with husband Denny Driscoll.
In recent years, finances have been tough, she said. Additionally, “we let the concept slide and get outdated,” said Driscoll. “We didn’t give it the attention it deserved.”
It’s time, she said, for someone else to take up residence in the space adjacent to a shoreline park that’s smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood. “It’s a great little spot and we’re hoping someone else has a new concept for it,” Driscoll said.
Denny Driscoll opened the Lobster Shop at Dash Point in 1977. At that time, he lived upstairs and did just about everything at the restaurant, including dishwashing. He opened a second Lobster Shop outpost on Commencement Bay in 1981. Later came Tanglewood Grill in Gig Harbor. In 2012, the Driscoll restaurant family grew to include Boathouse 19 at the Narrows Marina. Those restaurants will remain open and unchanged, although the Commencement Bay Lobster Shop on Ruston Way is undergoing a brief kitchen remodel this week. It closed Monday, but will reopen Feb. 26 with a new kitchen floor.
The Lobster Shop at Dash Point had an easy elegance about it, flirting with formality, but with an unfussy Northwest approach. The menu was a straightforward collection of Northwest favorites that had shifted slightly in recent years to more modern fare.
The Driscolls told staffers about the closure Tuesday evening, although the restaurant will remain open through dinner service March 15. Katie Driscoll said they wanted to give staffers enough time to find other employment. Some employees will move to other Driscoll-owned restaurants, she said.
