It’s been some time since this region had a Cajun restaurant, which made the opening of Bourbon Street Bar and Grill that much more anticipated.

The New Orleans-themed restaurant that opened in mid-December is a small destination that’s more bar than restaurant in downtown Puyallup.

Two first-bite visits in the inaugural month showed a restaurant trying hard to do the right thing – mostly succeeding at food, excelling at atmosphere, but struggling at service. Read more »

Miyabi Sushi plate 2

Attention sushi eaters – a soft opening alert. Lacking a sign and a full menu, Miyabi Sushi quietly opened in the location that formerly housed Kabuki, a longtime Tacoma  sushi destination that operated from 1992 until late 2013. Read more »

Bargain-focused Vietnamese deli Fresh Rolls opened Saturday near Bridgeport and 40th in University Place, a city short on dining choices.

The deli’s abbreviated menu lists a half dozen different styles of fresh spring rolls, which are chilled noodles, vegetables, lettuce and meats (if you want them) wrapped up in rice paper. The rolls are $4-$5 for two-packs with peanut dipping sauce. The menu listed  salmon, beef, grilled pork, shrimp, tofu vegetable and grilled chicken.  There’s also a short list of pho and salads. 12th Man crepes at Savor Creperie in downtown Tacoma

Tacoma’s Savor Creperie  is the latest restaurant with a Hawks special. Featured this week is a dessert crepe. Wrote Savor owner Tom Vigue, “We’re pleased to announce we are running a special this week. The Seahawks Crepe featuring the Hawks colors. A dessert crepe filled with fresh key lime mousse, topped with blueberries, and graham cracker crumb.” Find the creperie at 1916 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. Find the restaurant’s Facebook page here.

12th Man and clams – a photo contest from Ivar’s Restaurants

Restaurants and local food businesses are going nutty with Super Bowl stuff as the Seahawks prepare to take on the Denver Broncos this Sunday at Super Bowl XLVIII.

I’ll be writing about Hawks-themed dining events all  week. If you missed my story last week about Beast Mode Sausage from Blue Max Meats in Puyallup - read it here. It’s sausage made with Marshawn Lynch’s favorite power pellets – Skittles.

Here’s a fun 12th man photo  contest – from Ivar’s Restaurants: Read more »

I relish readers who ask me to go looking for the perfect something or other.

In 2013, readers sent me searching for the crispiest fish and chips, sloppiest meatball sandwiches and cheesiest chile rellenos.

I start 2014 with a mighty mission: to find the perfect hot pastrami sandwich.

Tacoma reader Jack Green sent me his must-have list for a hot pastrami sandwich. His hallmarks mirror mine: a sandwich piled high with pastrami of the juicy variety, made purely of rye bread and meat, although a pickle and mustard are an occasional nice addition. Read more »

The combination of meat and sweet is not all that unusual when you consider the delicious duos of bacon and syrup or melon and prosciutto.

But smoked sausage and … Skittles?

Yup. Spicy pork sausage infused with Marshawn Lynch’s favorite sideline treat – Skittles. It’s called Beast Mode Hot Skittles Sausage and it’s an ode to Lynch and the Super Bowl bound Hawks.

It’s the creation of Evan Greco and Tommy Marshall, the duo behind Blue Max Meats in the Summit neighborhood near Puyallup. Read more »
