Today, University Place residents Karen and Thomas Williams are opening the first of two frozen yogurt shops in an area long in need of more eateries - the University of Washington Tacoma. They expect to soon open a second frozen yogurt shop in University Place, at the intersection of Cirque and Bridgeport.
They originally hoped to open their stores last year – when froyo invaded the South Sound in a big way, placing multiple self-serve dessert spots everywhere, probably even in your basement (along with a farmers market and a craft brewery – bet you didn’t even know they’re operating down there).
Although they’re late to the frozen yogurt game with Yeti’s, Menchies and other chains landing here in recent months, Thomas Williams pointed to the portability, affordability and captive audience at UWT as reasons why they think their frozen yogurt shop will gain traction with students.
They’ll emphasize fresh and healthy toppers, as well as granola. They’ll still offer the sticky, sweet and loaded-with-sugar toppings, but Williams said his day job as a doctor – he works in the emergency room at St. Clare – dictates that plenty of fresh fruit and low-sugar offerings will be on the serve-yourself toppings bar.
Up next at the UWT is a pho restaurant. Than Brothers expects to open in three weeks. The restaurant will be the 17th location for Than Brothers, which opened its first pho restaurant in 1996 in North Seattle. The family operates a Than Brothers in Lakewood and one in Tacoma.
