A group is raising money to reopen the Goldfish Tavern, a neighborhood institution near Point Defiance Park. The bar closed late last year.  The Fish was established in 1933, making it one of the oldest watering holes in these parts.

The group reopening the tavern includes Carol Gore, whose family has owned the property since the 1950s. Teresa Smith, speaking on behalf of the family, said the building is in need of renovations. “We have a lot to do,”  she said. She described the work done already – new paint and mostly cosmetic fixes. One big need – that’s also hugely expensive -  is to redo the floors.

A hurdle so far is they can’t get a bank loan and don’t have enough money to reopen. So they hatched a plan. They’re holding a rummage sale from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday to get enough money together to host a beer garden at The Fish during the weekend of Taste of Tacoma, June 28-30. They hope to make enough money at the beer garden to begin building improvements.

Family members also have started a drive to raise money through gofundme.com.
