So you waited until the last minute to buy a Mother’s Day gift. How novel!
Don’t worry – I’m here to help. Here are five local and edible gifts for mom – that she’ll actually like. No gas station flowers, ok? You hear me? Read on.
Gift 1: Johnson truffles
Johnson Candy Company
Where: 924 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, 253-272-8504
Rows and rows of hand-made truffles usually are featured at the Hilltop candy shop, but they may be low by now. Ten bucks will buy you a nice box for mom (backup plan: Johnson dark salted caramels). Call before visiting. They’re open Saturday, but usually are closed Sunday. Plan accordingly.
Gift 2: Almond Roca
Brown & Haley retail stores
Where: In Tacoma and Fife, check addresses here
At the factory retail stores, find tins of the regular Roca for which Tacoma-based Brown & Haley is world famous, but also the signature Mountain Bars and the various Roca specialty flavors (I sometimes see baking mixes there, too. But be careful about giving mom a gift that she has to make – I call that the “vacuum cleaner move.” Don’t do it.). The Tacoma store is open through Sunday, but the Fife store is closed Sundays.
Gift 3: Fancy popcorn
Great Northwest Popcorn
Where: 1948 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253-779-5676 or greatnorthwestpopcorn.com
Don’t think of Great Northwest Popcorn as solely a destination for flavored popcorn, the store also carries a wide selection of candy. You’ll find hand-made caramels and chocolates in the display case near the register. Do get the chocolate turtles. They’ve got a nice assortment of candy for kids, too.
Gift 4: Take mom out for a meal
Lucky for you, I spent all week compiling a list of about 20 places to take mom for brunch, lunch, a buffet or dinner. Click here to read the list.
Gift 5: Fancy marshmallows
Madyson’s Gourmet Marshmallows
Sumner candy maker Breeze Wetzel makes something every mom would love – handmade marshmallows in cute shapes, colors and concepts. Find them at the Tea Madame and Ciarrai Jeanne Confections in Sumner and the Roca outlet store in Fife.
