Cupcakes and hot dogs – a pairing made in Parkland

Cupcakes and hot dogs may not seem all that synonymous, but the new combo business Eddie’s Dawg House and Yummers 2 the 3rd Power cupcake bakery is a pretty good business pairing of sweet-and-savory portable eats.

The duo opened last October in a black-and-white striped building with a catchy M-shaped awning just off 106th and Pacific in the Parkland neighborhood. This is the second location for Yummers, which opened in Parkland in February 2011 and was displaced last summer to make way for construction of a new building near Pacific Lutheran University.

The dual-sided business offers cupcakes from Amber Serrano, who was featured on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” last February. Flanking the bakery display case is an ordering window for Eddie’s Dawg House.

The Eddie behind the Dawg House is Serrano’s father. Serrano, like his daughter, is a self-taught cook. He started in catering and working at festivals, serving Puerto Rican and barbecue. His idea for a hot dog cafe was grounded in nostalgia. “Being from the East Coast – New York – I just went back to my roots and my heart. We used to go play baseball at the local park and ate at the street cart vendor. It was a great memory of eating the best hot dogs and wanted to give that back to people missing something I missed from the East Coast,” he wrote in an email.

The hot dog menu lists the usual favorites of a Coney and Chicago, but also has what can only be described as a crazy collection of gut bombs. There’s the Mac Doggy Dawg topped with macaroni and cheese and bacon, which was tastier than you would think it should be. The Lute comes with a cream cheese smeared bun with balsamic vinegar. The Devil Dawg is made with sriracha and jalapenos. The flavors are steeped in humor, much like Amber Serrano’s quirky cupcake combinations using ingredients like Monster energy drink and Slim Jim.

The dogs were tasty on my visit to Eddie’s, although the bun of a Chicago was just a touch stale. Dog prices are $3 for plain (there’s a long list of free toppers) to $4.50-$6.50 for specialty dogs, which come with a side of baked potato wedges.

Serrano serves what I’d want to see at a hot dog restaurant – Hebrew Nationals, Nathan’s, Louisiana Red Hots, kielbasa and even a veggie dog. Look for weekly specials. Sometimes Serrano will cook up an Italian beef or Puerto Rican pulled pork sandwiches.
Mom tip: Kids here get the extra special treatment with a menu priced $1.50-$2.
