UWT dining: Crepes, pho and frozen yogurt on the way to downtown Tacoma

In my inbox from the University of Washington Tacoma this morning is an announcement downtown eaters will love to read – three new restaurants are coming to the campus. I’ve already reported on one, Savor Creperie, which has delayed its opening from January to March. Even better news than a much needed creperie in that neighborhood is that downtown diners will be getting another pho restaurant – and it’s a local restaurant chain pho lovers will recognize.

I’m thrilled at the news that Than Brothers will be serving its Vietnamese soup -  sometime before this summer in the Joy Building. I’m partial to the broth served at their restaurants and the pho is bargain priced. Wrote university officials in a press release, “Than Brothers Pho will open up in the Joy Building before summer, offering the Vietnamese noodle soup popular among students at campuses throughout the region. Started in 1996, this local chain has 14 locations around the Puget Sound, mostly in the Seattle area. This will be their third restaurant in the South Sound. Than Brothers offer a simple menu, serving nothing but pho in more than 15 varieties.” Downtown Tacoma already is home to the excellent 701 Pho (a much more polished Vietnamese bistro experience), but that restaurant is all the way on the other end of Pacific (near Matador and Tacoma Cabana).

Because apparently the frozen yogurt trend just simply will not die (much to my chagrin), the UWT will get its own shop. Granola’s frozen yogurt is opening sometime before summer – also in the Joy Building. From the UWT, “In addition to frozen yogurt, they will offer a variety of cereals and oatmeal to get your day started right. You can mix and match any kind of snack or meal—and make it healthy or decadent—with their extensive toppings bar.”

As for Savor Creperie, owner Tom Vigue told me construction and building delays will mean a March opening for his creperie that will be similar to those found all over Vancouver B.C. Expect a menu of 15 savory and 10 dessert crepes.  Read more here.
