The walk-up burger restaurant DeLong’s Deluxe opens today in Lakewood. The restaurant is from retirees Tim and Marie DeLong who came up with the idea in their Milton kitchen.

The restaurant is a first food business for the DeLongs. Marie retired from a career with the Washington History Museum, Tim retired from the City of Tacoma’s public works department last year. They said they wanted to get the burger “right” – so they opted for quarter-pound chuck patties – fresh, not frozen – that they’ll serve alongside what they describe as good quality frozen fries. Cheese will be Tillamook. They make their own burger sauce. The menu lists drive-in classics – a dozen burgers, all-beef hot dogs, onion rings and shakes. Something I like to see? Frito chili pie. Check the menu below.

The restaurant is walk-up only with a courtyard for seating – but it looks like I’ll be treating it how I treat Pick-Quick nine months out of the year – order at the window and run back to take cover in your car and roll down your window a crack so you can hear your number. Speaking of Pick-Quick, the Fife Drive-in restaurant reopened Feb. 1 after its winter hiatus. Here’s something else that’s fun – the DeLong’s have a famous burger neighbor. They live near Greg Burgi, son of Pick-Quick owner Joe Burgi.

NOTE TO BURGER LOVERS:  The Stadium neighborhood burger restaurant Shake Shake Shake is closer than ever to opening. They’re hiring cashiers and other positions. For information on job openings, check out the TNT Diner Facebook page here. To read more about Shake Shake Shake, read this story.
