My Greek opens in Westgate neighborhood, Ammar’s Mediterranean Grill plans grand opening

My Greek is now open in the Westgate neighborhood where Shari’s once operated. The Greek eatery does double duty with an Italian menu of pasta and pizza.  My Greek is open for lunch and dinner and also has a full bar. A look at the menu shows an eatery quite similar in pricing and style to My Greek’s original location in Puyallup, which closed in July. Nader Morcos opened that restaurant in Puyallup in 2007 as the first U.S. location of the Canadian Mr. Greek chain. He left the franchise in 2008 and changed the name to My Greek.

On the menu at the Westgate My Greek are the usual suspects like gyros, falafel and souvlaki wrap sandwiches – $8.95-$9.95 – and platters that feed two to three diners with a choice of meats, sides and spreads ($24.95-$34.95). At dinner, the menu gets a little deeper into Greek and more spendy with entrees $13.95-$19.95. I spotted moussaka with two sides and soup or salad for a fair price of $13.95. I’ve ordered it at their Puyallup location – My Greek gets the eggplant-bechamel dish exactly right. Two lamb preparations show up on the menu: Lamb chops ($17.95) and lamb shank ($16.95). I’ve had the chops at the former Puyallup restaurant and really liked that dish. I’ve not dipped much into the Italian side of the menu while dining at the Puyallup My Greek, but I noted the Tacoma menu lists a large selection of pastas and pizza. The pizza menu reads quite similar to It’s Greek to Me’s pizza menu – all the way down to the pizza names “New Yorker,” “Polynesian” and “Athenian.”

The dining room still feels like a Shari’s – a circular layout with booths lining the windows. A medium sized bar anchors the front dining room. The decor is not nearly as modern or polished as it was at the Puyallup location, yet it’s an accessible restaurant that feels a good fit for Westgate. The dining room is a family-friendly space and the restaurant serves a style of food needed in that part of town.  Parent alert: The $5.95 children’s menu lists eight choices.

In other Greek restaurant news, the newly opened Ammar’s Mediterranean Grill is doing brisk business. Several readers have contacted me asking about the restaurant in the Dome neighborhood. I snapped a few pictures of the menu on a recent visit where I enjoyed gyros ($8.99) and lamb kebabs ($12.99) – look for menu photos below. Much like the sister restaurant in Freighthouse Square – Mediterranean Palace – Ammar and Sorada Mannaa’s new neighborhood eatery produces consistently well executed Greek cuisine with deeply-layered flavors and generous portion sizes.  The only difference is a more formal setting and slightly prettier plating than their food court restaurant in Freighthouse. At the new sit-down restaurant, they also expanded the menu to include Italian and American dishes and a few far-flung flavors like curry. They’ll host a grand opening party Feb. 9 at the restaurant.
