Doughnut bakery opening in Puyallup

The opening has been delayed by several weeks, but if building upgrades are approved, Epic Donuts will open in Puyallup later this month or early next. Signs for the business have been up for weeks and South Hill residents have been asking me about the doughnut shop. Here’s what I know.

The walk-in bakery won’t have any seating, but will have a display case selling doughnuts. The bakery will offer curbside pick-up. The bakery intends to operate early morning and daytime hours, closing by late afternoon every day. Drip coffee and cocoa will be sold, but not espresso. With the recent closure of Krispy Kreme (now a Panera) on South Hill, doughnuts outside a grocery store bakery have been in short supply. The bakery will cater to kids – a pretty safe bet in a suburban community like South Hill – with its Epic Eddy mascot and specials aimed at schools and youth sports teams.

Opening the doughnut bakery are longtime restaurant manager Tom Dobrinski and wife Erin, a former teacher who now sells real estate. They’ve lived in South Hill for 14 years. Tom Dobrinski previously worked for chains like B.J.’s Brewhouse and Billy McHale’s. Earlier in his career, he managed the Harmon in Tacoma.

The Dobrinskis had planned an early December opening, but a venting hood upgrade slowed them down, then other building problems emerged, the couple told me last month. They have a few permits they’re trying to get approved and plan to open soon after.

Their doughnuts will be made from a mix and they’ll have flavors like peanut butter and jelly, caramel apple, banana split and strawberry shortcake. Tom Dobrinski described the doughnuts as something like those of Portland’s VooDoo Doughnuts, only “less gothic.” He’s looking forward to serving a Beatles themed doughnut called Penny Lane.
