Food gifting: Madyson’s Marshmallows

As owner Breeze Wetzel puts it, Madyson’s Marshmallows began out of a child’s curiosity and is now a fledgling business for the Sumner family. Here are excerpts from an interview with owner Breeze Wetzel, who runs the handmade marshmallow business with Brian Wetzel.

 

Q: You’ve operated for three years – can you tell me a bit about how you grew out of a child’s curiosity? Who is this child?
A: Our daughter Madyson was 4 at the time and asked us how to make marshmallows and we didn’t have the first clue. We got to cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. She and I then started selling her marshmallows at local holiday bazaars. She set up her booth and made $120 the first time and then around $400 the next time. She thought she was the coolest thing. We decided to rent a kitchen and set up a website and the rest is history. We are currently is talks with two major retail stores to carry Madyson’s Marshmallows.

Q: Where can locals buy your marshmallows?
A: You can buy them at the Tea Madam in Sumner at Windmill Gardens. Also, we are online but customers can arrange to pick their order up from our kitchen, freshly made just for them!

Q: Tell readers about your products.
A: Our most popular item is our sticky caramel dipped fluffs, where we begin with our hand-made marshmallows and add a layer of our very own ‘secret recipe’ caramel and then dip it in delicious artisan chocolate. Another local favorite is our Chip Fluffs, where we put chocolate chips inside our hand made marshmallows so that when you roast the marshmallow over a fire, the chocolate and the marshmallow melt together. Also available is peanut butter, toffee, butterscotch and more.
