Puyallup River Brewing will open an alehouse in downtown Puyallup

After less than a year in business, Puyallup River Brewing is expanding from a garage brewery to an alehouse that will open in downtown Puyallup sometime in January.

Owner-brewer Eric Akeson plans a 2,000-square-foot alehouse that will tap local craft beers as well as the beers he brews in his backyard South Hill brewery, which he will keep as the headquarters for his brewing operation.

Akeson started bottling and self-distributing beer this spring, selling to the Tacoma Boys grocery stores and rapidly adding South Sound restaurants, pubs, beer stores and taprooms to his stable of buyers. While larger distribution may be in his future, for now he’ll continue to self-distribute while cycling his beers through his new downtown Puyallup alehouse. Those beers include his standards: Point Success Porter, Valley Farmhouse IPA, Fryingpan Cascadian Red Ale, and Paradise Blonde Saison. He’ll also cycle through his specialty seasonal brews like Peche Farmhouse Saison and Jack O’Lahar pumpkin ale.

The alehouse will stick with just beer; no food will be served, but visitors are welcome to bring their own. (I suggest matching PRB beers with cheese from nearby My Cheese Shoppe). The alehouse will open in the former home of Pioneer Bakery that closed in September. A remodel is taking the bakery space down to the bones of the old building. The remodeled space will add a second bathroom.

Akeson will separate the alehouse into a seating area for 50 and a gaming area that will have a pool table and vintage arcade video games. He not only collects vintage arcade games, he’s also been inducted into the International Video Game Hall of Fame (a story in itself).
