Fruity pebbles = crunchy doughnut topper at Legendary Doughnuts in Lakeland Hills. The Lake Tapps area bakery is opening a second outpost in Tacoma this November.

Hey, forget about elections for five minutes (but be sure to go here for intensely local elections coverage after your break). Instead, think about delicious pastries. Here’s an update on a cupcake shop that moved and a doughnut bakery that just opened on Sixth Avenue. Read on.

Legendary Doughnuts opened Sunday on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma. The shop is owned by Shannon Patten, who opened the original Legendary Doughnuts in the Lakeland Hills neighborhood in May 2010 with the aid of her husband and their two sons – the oldest is a bakery employee and the youngest is the chief doughnut taster. Before opening Legendary Doughnuts, Shannon worked in the food business as a cheese company representative. Husband Ken’s career is humorous in the context of owning a doughnut shop – he’s a police officer. The style of doughnuts is easy to describe – think Portland’s VooDoo Doughnuts, only in a shinier and more carefully decorated setting (I call it VooDoo Doughnuts as translated by a soccer mom). Patten takes the concept of using interesting and sometimes freakishly weird ingredients – like breakfast cereal and beer. Most of her doughnuts are named after notable entertainers or historical figures. Doughnut purists, don’t freak. She makes plain ol’ doughnuts, too.

Yummers 2 the 3rd power – the cupcake bakery that wins an award for the most awkward name to remember whens searching for it on Facebook – has moved. The bakery moved from its location on Garfield near Pacific Lutheran University to make way for a new building. Yummers didn’t go far to its new home – it’s at 10625 Pacific Ave. S. That’s the same neighborhood as Bruno’s European Cafe and Frugal’s, two places that make me happy. Yummers opened in the spring of 2011, the project of Amber Serrano and some of her family members. The cupcake shop got some national attention earlier this year when it was featured on the television show “Cupcake Wars.”
