Tacos al fresco? Ricos Tacos returns and two new buses are in Puyallup

Ricos Tacos has returned to its Center Street location.

An accident led to the temporary closure of Ricos Tacos, a new and promising taco bus that opened earlier this year on the edge of Fircrest at 5015 S. Center St.,Tacoma. Yesterday, the bus returned to its home in the 76 Station parking lot – the sunny weather is long gone and so is the prime time taco truck season, but that didn’t stop customers from dropping by for tacos. Speaking of unseasonable taco truck weather, I spotted a few new buses in downtown Puyallup earlier this month. It’s not exactly al fresco dining season, but I’m always a fan of tacos, even during sideways rain. Read on.

Dos Banderas: In the parking lot of Mr. Sudsy and the 76 Station at 1504 E. Main St. is a taco truck with an abbreviated menu of tortas, burritos, tacos, tostados and quesadillas, priced $4-$6, with burgers and dogs, too. The truck earns mobile food points for its bacon-wrapped hot dog, a popular portable sandwich in Mexico. I went with my taco truck standby – a carnitas torta ($5.50). I appreciated the sandwich was built on a much more sturdy bun that more closely resembled the texture of a ciabatta than a soft, squishy bun so many trucks use for their Mexican sandwiches (squishy bun=mess in your lap). Slow-cooked pork shoulder was griddled until crispy, then topped with jalapenos, a swipe of mayo, onions, lettuce and tomato. It was a two-napkin sandwich and a good one.
Payment: They take cash and cards, seating is limited to one covered picnic bench right next to the very loud car wash.

Tortas Las Tortugas: A few months ago, on River Road, a tiny taco truck parked itself for business in the Sureway Collision parking lot at 823 River Road. The truck serves a short menu of torta sandwiches, tacos and burritos. They didn’t have carnitas, so I ordered an adobada – spicy marinated pork – torta ($5.99) and thought it missed the mark with chewy meat and slightly stale bread. Still, this truck shows promise. Staffers offered details at length about their future menu plans. I’ll be back for another bite.
Payment: They take cash and cards, seating is limited to high-back chairs at a counter built into the truck.
