It might be a bit of a stretch to call Wanna Cupcake?’s new downtown Tacoma location a “cupcake bakery.” Think of it as more of a cupcake kiosk. Located in the hallway just outside Anthem Coffee – which is sandwiched between Union Station and the Washington State History Museum – is a tiny outpost of the bakery that got its start at the Puyallup Farmers Market. The bakery opened its first retail location in June on Main Street in Puyallup, quickly expanding last month to downtown Tacoma in partnership with Anthem Coffee & Tea.
The bakery is owned by Jim and Karie Romano, who live in Bonney Lake with their three children, Adrianna, Andrew and Julia. The cupcakes that Karie baked for Julia’s fourth birthday party gave the couple the idea to turn Karie’s home-baked treats into a business. The business started with the couple selling to Forza and Champions Centre. The next step was the Puyallup Farmers Market in 2011. They rented space on Main Street as a commercial baking location, which they turned into a walk-in shop in June. The cupcake bakery has a menu that changes daily. Cupcakes are priced $3 each, or $2.75 if more than one is purchased – prices are the same at the kiosk at Anthem.
Isn’t that a neighborhood already home to a cupcake bakery? You bet it is. Hello, Cupcake has operated in downtown Tacoma since 2007. Below, I’ve included my directory of cupcake shops all over South Sound:
