Several South Sound brewers will debut new beers this Saturday at the fourth annual Tacoma Craft Beer Festival.
Tacoma’s Engine House No. 9 will have a barrel blend that E9 brewer Shane Johns described as “made up of three beers aged in a Woodinville whiskey barrel.” Wingman Brewers, also of Tacoma, will debut its new Single Hop Sauvin IPA.
South Sound brewers comprise a healthy block of about a dozen out of 57 breweries that will pour Saturday at the festival that takes place on the Foss Waterway.
Attendees pay $30 at the door for a commemorative glass and 10 tasting tokens. The event is set up roam-around style where attendees pick and choose which beers to sample from 57 booths outfitted with multiple taps. Saturday’s event raises funds for the Tacoma Historical Society. Discounts are available for designated drivers and for retired and active military members.
I checked in with South Sound brewers to see what they’ll tap. Tuesday, I told you what 7 Seas, Duo and Harmon are tapping. Today, I’ll share the tap lists of Wingman, Puyallup River Brewing and Engine House No 9. Check back tomorrow for an interview with Justin Johnson, the beer aficionado who booked this year’s brewers.
Engine House No. 9
611 N. Pine St., Tacoma, 253-272-3435, ehouse9.com
Brewer: Shane Johns
From Johns: “We’ll be pouring one new Saison Farmer Ralph, a light flavorful saison. Additionally we will be doing a TCBF exclusive barrel blend.”
Tasting notes from Johns:
Farmer Ralph: “A light bodied straw colored farmhouse ale. With aromas of banana, lemon rind, pepper and a hints of barnyard. Citrus and hop flavors are balanced by rich malt and slight wheat tartness finishing dry.”
TCBF Barrel Blend: “Blended exclusively for the fest the blend is made up of three beers aged in a Woodinville whiskey barrel, 12 and 20 year heaven hill bourbon barrels. Oak bourbon vanilla dominates the aroma. A complex flavor of bourbon, oak, chocolate, toffee with subtle pepper notes invade the palate, and linger through the finish.”
Belgian White: “Grainy spicy wheat aromatics with hints of coriander and orange.”
Dry Hop IPA: “Medium bodied with a citrus blast up front followed by subtle pine and citrus notes throughout with a lingering bitter finish.”
Hard Day’s Work: Served in the VIP tent. “A traditionally brewed saison we bourbon barrel aged for five months.”

From Thoburn, tasting notes and descriptions of the beers he’ll tap:
Pocket Aces 2X IPA: Made with 50 percent more Washington-grown barley and 100 percent more American-grown hops than the regular IPA.
Coconut P-51 Porter: “This is a beer for Hawaiian shirts and flip flops. Take the already delicious P-51 and add a delectable toasted coconut flavor.”
Single Hop Sauvin IPA: A new beer for the festival. “New Zealand hops are becoming more and more popular. For this reason we worked very hard to snag a small amount of Nelson Sauvin hops to share the flavors of New Zealand with Tacoma.”
