Chain watch: Updates on Chipotle Mexican Grill, Panera Bread and Buffalo Wild Wings

I usually don’t write about national chain restaurants because I’m too busy feasting at locally grown restaurants, but readers send me questions asking about their favorite chain restaurants opening in the South Sound region. Consider this an update on their behalf.

Chipotle Mexican Grill:The national fast-casual Mexican food chain that is something like a Qdoba Mexican Grill has applied for a liquor permit and work is underway at the Tacoma Mall Chipotle restaurant. A mall spokeswoman said the estimated opening date is late September or early October. Chipotle will be in a newly created 2,400 square foot space between J.C. Penney and Sears.

Buffalo Wild Wings Puyallup: I don’t have an opening date, but Buffalo Wild Wings is coming to South Hill. I’ve been keeping tabs on construction and it looks as if it’s in the final stages. This is the second Pierce County location for the national chain that specializes in hot wings with a lengthy array of spices and sauces – the first Pierce County location opened last October at the Tacoma Mall.

Something of note: My Greek in the same shopping complex as Buffalo Wild Wings in Puyallup has closed. I went searching for information and found an announcement on My Greek’s website that it is moving to nearby Sunrise Village on South Hill. I’ve left messages with the owners and Sunrise Village.

Panera Bread Puyallup: Out with one chain, in with another. Panera Bread opened Aug. 22 in the location that formerly housed Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in the South Hill Mall complex. I don’t know much about the menu and bread about Panera, but I have written about their Cuban sandwich and it was decent (read another review of Cuban sandwiches here).
